Excerpt from Under Fire: With the 370th Infantry (8th I. N. G.) A. E. F.; Memoirs of the World War We claim no literary genius for this book. It is not written as a treatise on the war - but a simple narration of facts pertain ing to the part played by the men of the 8th (37oth) U. S. In lantry, composed largely of men from Berean Baptist Church and Congregation. We endeavor to show by concrete facts how despite the hardships and handicap of prejudice these men emerged from the World's great battle fields of Europe the most deco rated Regiment in the A. E. F. Hence in reading the following pages look not to find aught save the plain unvarnished story of the dangers through which we successfully passed - the hardships we endured, and our ultimate victory. Excerpt from The American Legion Magazine, Vol. 29: September, 1940 By the very nature of things, Petain was the man whom Pershing had to turn to most frequently after his arrival in France - and by the nature of things Petain had more to do than any other Allied officer with the building up and with the fighting apprenticeship of the A. E. F. For all this, beyond a doubt, he had a better head than any other officer in France. Quite apart from his official position, his clear head and sound judgment and his extraordinary professional capacity made a lasting impression upon all the American officers who came into personal contact with him. No officer in France had a clearer grasp of the innumerable technical aspects of the organization of armies and of the conduct of war in the stage reached by 1917; no one had kept pace more fully with the amazing number of changes and new developments since 1914; and it is pretty clear that there was no one whose private judgment on professional ques tions Pershing valued quite so much.
