Excerpt from The Spiritual Franciscans When an idea finds acceptance in the world, it clothes itself in forms available for it and adapted to it. Socialization means institutionalization. For if an idea is to have growth, it must adopt propagandism; and propagandism implies the equipment of missionaries, the establishment of posts and stations, the instruction of neophytes, the control of agents, the commission of tribunals - in a single word, organization. To a majority of converts to any religious ideal this course of development seems normal and desirable, the index of the triumph of the ideal among men. But a minority have always deplored such adaptation and institutionalization as a weak compromise with the world, or even as a treasonable surrender of the pure ideal to those very powers of evil for whose destruction it was conceived. Moreover, the zealous minority, bound into a closer solidarity by the very fact of their minority, their puritanism heightened by persecution, have quite commonly developed the pathological traits consequent upon the conviction of persecuted innocence and impotent fidelity. They have appealed from the world to heaven, from time to eternity, from man to God. Their language has ceased to be a medium of human commerce, and has become an instrument of supernatural oracles. Their refuge has been in retreat, absorption, mysticism, prophecy, ecstasy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Franciscans and the Protestant Revolution in England In the following pages, an attempt is made to relate the story of the English Franciscans during the first century of the Protestant Revolution. Among the causes commonly assigned, even by Catholic historians, for the rapid spread of Protestantism in Europe is the inactivity and degeneracy of the so-called old Orders at the time when the conflict began. This serious charge loses much of its significance if we remember that for forty years these old Orders bore the brunt of the attack against the overwhelming forces of the enemy. The fact, too, that more than 150 members of these old Orders played a prominent role in the Council of Trent shows that their laxism and indifference could not have been so great after all. As to the Franciscan Order in particular, it may sufice to call to mind that of the above-mentioned 150 religious 85 were sons of St. Francis, and that, further more, between the years 1520 and 1620, more than 500 Franciscans shed their blood for the faith in the various countries of europe. Excerpt from The Franciscans in England, 1600-1850: Being an Authentic Account of the Second English Province of Friars Minor In a few cases where useful information could be gathered from existing authors, I have thought it but right to avail myself of it, and reference to these sources will be found in the proper places. With these few exceptions all the materials for this work have been collected from the writings of the old Franciscans. Excerpt from The Early Franciscans Jesuits: A Study in Contrasts The Franciscan lectures in this volume were delivered in Salisbury Cathedral during the war those on the Jesuits at various centres of study in the diocese. They are now presented to a larger public, in the hope of deepening the interest of the average reader in the religious enthusiasms of the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. It has long been the conviction of the writer that the study of ecclesiastical history in this country is pursued in too insular a spirit and that it would be a great gain to the Anglican student to investigate those wider movements which swept like an incoming tide over every part of Western Europe. Excerpt from Saint Francis and His Friends: Rendered Into English From Franciscan Chronicles He resolved that henceforth his life should be conformed to a rule of Gospel simplicity, of evangelic poverty. He would live only on the bread of charity. He would clothe himself only in a coarse gown, girded with a knotted cord. Excerpt from The Romanticism of St. Francis: And Other Studies in the Genius of the Franciscans Franciscan history. To many people St. Francis is a mediaeval prophet with a spiritual message for our own day. The question arises: What is the mes sage which he brought to the world when he set up his standard of poverty in the Umbrian plain? Until we know that we cannot tell whether or how far his message is of immediate value at this present time. The Forgotten Radical Peter Maurin written by Peter Maurin and has been published by Fordham University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-04 with Religion categories.

The definitive edition of Catholic Worker cofounder Peter Maurin's Easy Essays, including 74 previously unpublished works Although Peter Maurin is well known among people connected to the Catholic Worker movement, his Catholic Worker co-founder and mentee Dorothy Day largely overshadowed him. Maurin was never the charismatic leader that Day was, and some Workers found his idiosyncrasies challenging. Reticent to write or even speak much about his personal life, Maurin preferred to present his beliefs and ideas in the form of Easy Essays, published in the New York Catholic Worker. Featuring 482 of his essays, as well as 87 previously unpublished ones, this text offers a great contribution to the corpus of twentieth-century Catholic life. At first glance, Maurin’s Easy Essays appear overly simplistic and preposterous. But upon further investigation, his essays are much more complex and nuanced. Packed with demanding ideas meant to convey dense information and encourage the listener to ponder different ways to understand and interact with reality, his short poetic phrases became his modus operandi for communicating his vision and became a hallmark of his public theology. Each essay contained anywhere from one to ten or more stanzas and were part of a larger arrangement, often titled. Within the larger arrangements were individual essays, which were also titled and arranged in such a manner as to support the overall thesis. Many individual essays were later repeated in slightly altered forms in new arrangements. Previous arrangements were also repeated that omitted or added an essay. Providing scholarly and contextual information for the modern reader, this annotated collection includes more than 350 footnotes which offer a layer of intelligibility that explains Maurin’s use of obscure references to historical people and events that would have been common knowledge for readers during the 1930s. When appropriate, the footnotes explain why Maurin chose to cite a person or event. A scholarly Introduction offers a robust synthesis of contemporary scholarship on Maurin and the Catholic Worker that considers radical Catholicism and questions regarding race, ethnicity, religious difference, and gender, because many of Maurin’s essays take up these themes. This book shapes the ways Maurin is read in the present day and the ways leftist Catholicism is understood as part of twentieth-century history.
