This volume contains the proceedings of the 2003 International Conference on Formal Engineering Methods (ICFEM 2003). The conference was the ?fth in a series that began in 1997. ICFEM 2003 was held in Singapore during 5–7 November 2003. ICFEM 2003 aimed to bring together researchers and practitioners from - dustry, academia, and government to advance the state of the art in formal engineering methods and to encourage a wider uptake of formal methods in industry. Traditionally, models and methods for the analysis of the functional correctness of reactive systems, and those for the analysis of their performance (and - pendability) aspects, have been studied by di?erent research communities. This has resulted in the development of successful, but distinct and largely unrelated modeling and analysis techniques for both domains. In many modern systems, however, the di?erence between their functional features and their performance properties has become blurred, as relevant functionalities become inextricably linked to performance aspects, e.g. isochronous data transfer for live video tra- mission. During the last decade, this trend has motivated an increased interest in c- bining insights and results from the ?eld of formal methods – traditionally - cused on functionality – with techniques for performance modeling and analysis. Prominent examples of this cross-fertilization are extensions of process algebra and Petri nets that allow for the automatic generation of performance models, the use of formal proof techniques to assess the correctness of randomized - gorithms, and extensions of model checking techniques to analyze performance requirements automatically. We believe that these developments markthe - ginning of a new paradigm for the modeling and analysis of systems in which qualitative and quantitative aspects are studied from an integrated perspective. We are convinced that the further worktowards the realization of this goal will be a growing source of inspiration and progress for both communities.

Testing often accounts for more than 50% of the required e?ort during system development.Thechallengeforresearchistoreducethesecostsbyprovidingnew methods for the speci?cation and generation of high-quality tests. Experience has shown that the use of formal methods in testing represents a very important means for improving the testing process. Formal methods allow for the analysis andinterpretationofmodelsinarigorousandprecisemathematicalmanner.The use of formal methods is not restricted to system models only. Test models may alsobeexamined.Analyzingsystemmodelsprovidesthepossibilityofgenerating complete test suites in a systematic and possibly automated manner whereas examining test models allows for the detection of design errors in test suites and their optimization with respect to readability or compilation and execution time. Due to the numerous possibilities for their application, formal methods have become more and more popular in recent years. The Formal Approaches in Software Testing (FATES) workshop series also bene?ts from the growing popularity of formal methods. After the workshops in Aalborg (Denmark, 2001), Brno (Czech Republic, 2002) and Montr ́ eal (Canada, 2003), FATES 2004 in Linz (Austria) was the fourth workshop of this series. Similar to the workshop in 2003, FATES 2004 was organized in a?liation with the IEEE/ACM Conference on Automated Software Engineering (ASE 2004). FATES 2004 received 41 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three independent reviewers from the Program Committee with the help of some additional reviewers. Based on their evaluations, 14 full papers and one wo- in-progress paper from 11 di?erent countries were selected for presentation.
