Nineteenth-century Germany witnessed many debates on the nature of the nation, both before and after unification in 1871. Bourgeois authors engaged closely with questions of class and national identity, and resourcefully sought to influence the collective destiny of the German people through works of popular fiction and cultural history. Typical of this trend was the realist writer Gustav Freytag (1816-1895), the most widely read novelist of his era. Innovatively exploring all of Freytag's works (poetry, drama, novels, history, journalism, biography and literary theory), Schofield examines how his popular writing systematically re-imagined the social structures of German society, embedding political agendas within contemporary stories of private lives. Connecting the aesthetics of Realism with the political aims of the bourgeoisie, the study both reassesses Freytag's position within the German literary canon and re-evaluates received opinion on the socio-political function of Realism in German culture. Benedict Schofield is Lecturer in German at King's College London.

This book attempts for the first time a comparative literary history of Germany and the USA in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its material does not come from the familiar overlaps of individual German and American writers, but from the work of the literary historians of the two countries after 1815, when American intellectuals took Germany as a model for their project to create an American national literature. The first part of the book examines fundamental structural affinities between the two literary histories and the common problems these caused, especially in questions of canon, realism, aesthetics and in the marginalization of popular and women's writing. In the second part, significant figures whose work straddle the two literatures - from Sealsfield and Melville, Whitman and Thomas Mann to Nietzsche, Emerson and Bellow - are discussed in detail, and the arguments of the first part are shown in their relevance to understanding major writers. This book is not merely comparative in scope: it shows that only international comparison can explain the course of American literary history in the nineteenth and twentieth century. As recent developments in American Studies explore the multi-cultural and 'hybrid' nature of the American tradition, this book offers evidence of the dependencies which linked American and German national literary history.

Im Zuge des ‚Spatial Turn‘ entwickelt insbesondere das Konzept der Heterotopie nach Michel Foucault literaturwissenschaftliche Prominenz. Der motivische Ausweis solcher ‚anderen Räume‘ jedoch bleibt dabei hinter einer tatsächlichen Übertragung in das literaturwissenschaftliche Paradigma der Textualität zurück. Dementsprechend beschreibt das vorliegende Modell die Heterotopie im Anschluss an Roman Jakobsons Zwei-Achsen-Theorie (1) als epochenübergreifendes Verfahren einer paradigmatischen Abweichung, um (2) epochenspezifische Variationen am Beispiel romantisch-metaphorischer respektive realistisch-metonymischer Raumlogiken zu erfassen. Vor diesem Kontrast erweist sich die Heterotopie in ihren jeweiligen Ausprägungen zugleich als Reflexionsraum, der die Parameter des Textes aufzeigt, innerhalb dessen er entworfen wird. Die Modellierung ‚anderer Räume‘ als epochenübergreifendes Textverfahren präzisiert damit zum einen den so ubiquitär wie dehnbar verwendeten Heterotopiebegriff und führt diesen einer trennscharfen Anwendbarkeit zu. Zum anderen stellt der Blick auf Heterotopien vice versa die jeweilige Erzähllogik heraus, in deren Rahmen der erzählte Raum motivunabhängig als ‚anderer Raum‘ konstruiert ist.

Obwohl Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841) und die an ihn anschließende Ästhetiktradition eine hegemoniale Stellung in den geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen des 19. Jahrhunderts innehatten, ist die herbartianische Ästhetik und das mit ihr verbundene formalistische Theorieprogramm aus dem heutigen Wissenschaftsbewusstsein verschwunden. Die Quellenedition präsentiert erstmals Texte derjenigen Autoren, die zwischen 1820 und 1920 eine formalistische Ästhetik auf herbartianischer Grundlage erarbeitet haben. Gewirkt hat dieser frühe Formalismus in drei Hinsichten: Erstens hat er zu einer funktionalistischen Neukonzeption des Formbegriffs und seiner metaphysischen Traditionen geführt; zweitens hat er Methodik und Selbstverständnis der geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung im 20. Jahrhundert geprägt; drittens hat er den diversen europäischen Strukturalismen vorgearbeitet. Die Edition macht damit unbekannte Grundlagen der geisteswissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung und der philosophischen Ästhetik zugänglich. Berücksichtigt wird dabei auch die tschechische Theorielinie in deutschen Erstübersetzungen.
