Formerly British Honduras written by William David Setzekorn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with History categories.

William Setzekorn weaves the folklore, facts, history, culture, economics and geography of Belize into an exciting mini-encyclopedia. His portrait of this proud new nation is painted with humor, gentleness, fact and empathy presenting a credible picture of modern day Belize. Reading with the ease and excitement of a novel it is more than a history book, a travelog or an encyclopedia giving the reader a feeling of kinship with the struggles and joy of this tiny new nation. A mixture of Africans, Mestizos, East Indians, Europeans, Syrians, Lebanese, Mayans, and Chinese; Belize has grown into a heterogenous mosaic of a strong and brave country which is no bigger than Cambridge, Massachusetts. Studying the influences of British domination and Spanish intimidation up to the recent movements for self-government and independence, Setzekorn presents to the reader an accounting of Belizean social and political vicissitudes -- a long and tortuous, yet coherent, struggle for national and cultural identity. Belize (formerly British Honduras) is a residue of the British Empire and the last colony in the Americas. Like most colonies in this age of decolonisation Belize was willing to break the colonial ties and in fact achieved internal self-government in 1964. It is, however, deterred from taking its full independence by Guatemala's century-old claim to its territory, a claim famous in international law. Belize is more than a British enclave in Central America, it is a meeting place, the borderland of two quite different cultural worlds. These are the White - Creole - Carib and the Spanish - Mestizo - Indian complexes which together produce among Belize's 120,000 inhabitants a racial, linguistic and cultural heterogeneity that is unusual either in the Commonwealth Caribbean or in Central America. There Belize's distinctiveness ends. Structurally, it is as economically dependent as its neighbours. Endowed with luxuriant forest resources, it was from the start a classical example of colonial exploitation, of taking away and not giving back in terms of permanent improvement and capital development. It was only when the forest resources were depleted after the Second World War that its other natural resource, agriculture, received attention.

This is a general study of Belize, its people and history including its transformation from colonial status as a British colony - known as British Honduras - to independent nationhood when the country assumed its current name. Subjects covered include the country's cultural and ethnic diversity, as well as its political landscape, constituting a vibrant heterogeneous society that is also unique in the Central American region as the only country that was once ruled by Britain. As a general study, the work is intended for members of the general public. But some members of the academic community may also find it to be useful.

Trespassers Forgiven written by C.H. Godden and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-28 with Travel categories.

Within three decades of the end of the Second World War, the British Empire had been dismantled leaving only a few residual spots of red on the world map. This was the age of decolonisation and Independence. "Trespassers Forgiven" offers a personal glimpse into the history of British Honduras (Belize) at this crucial period in British history. C.H. Godden examines the long road Belize travelled to eventual independence in 1981 after more than a century as a British colony. He demonstrates the very real difficulties the new government faced and how the country's progression to independence was considerably delayed by Guatemala's territorial claim and the many international complications and obstacles that followed in its wake. Drawing on the author's personal experiences at the Colonial Office in the region at this decisive time, "Trespassers Forgiven" illuminates the colony's unique history and draws attention to the neglected and almost forgotten story of Britain's involvement in Central America.
