This thesis introduces the concept of "thermal pure quantum (TPQ) states", which are pure quantum states in equilibrium. The author establishes a new formulation of statistical mechanics based on the TPQ states. This formulation allows us to obtain not only mechanical variables but also thermodynamic variables such as entropy and free energy from a single TPQ state. Furthermore, the formulation provides a new physical description in which all fluctuations including thermally driven ones are uniquely identified to be quantum fluctuations. The use of TPQ formulation has practical advantages in its application to numerical computations and allows for significant reduction in computation cost in numerics. For demonstration purposes, a numerical computation based on TPQ formulation is applied to a frustrated two-dimensional quantum spin model, and the result is also included in this book.

Quantum physics has been highly successful for more than 90 years. Nevertheless, a rigorous construction of interacting quantum field theory is still missing. Moreover, it is still unclear how to combine quantum physics and general relativity in a unified physical theory. Attacking these challenging problems of contemporary physics requires highly advanced mathematical methods as well as radically new physical concepts. This book presents different physical ideas and mathematical approaches in this direction. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lectures which took place in autumn 2014 at the sixth conference ``Quantum Mathematical Physics - A Bridge between Mathematics and Physics'' in Regensburg, Germany. In the tradition of the other proceedings covering this series of conferences, a special feature of this book is the exposition of a wide variety of approaches, with the intention to facilitate a comparison. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.

Understanding dissipative dynamics of open quantum systems remains a challenge in mathematical physics. This problem is relevant in various areas of fundamental and applied physics. From a mathematical point of view, it involves a large body of knowledge. Significant progress in the understanding of such systems has been made during the last decade. These books present in a self-contained way the mathematical theories involved in the modeling of such phenomena. They describe physically relevant models, develop their mathematical analysis and derive their physical implications. In Volume I the Hamiltonian description of quantum open systems is discussed. This includes an introduction to quantum statistical mechanics and its operator algebraic formulation, modular theory, spectral analysis and their applications to quantum dynamical systems. Volume II is dedicated to the Markovian formalism of classical and quantum open systems. A complete exposition of noise theory, Markov processes and stochastic differential equations, both in the classical and the quantum context, is provided. These mathematical tools are put into perspective with physical motivations and applications. Volume III is devoted to recent developments and applications. The topics discussed include the non-equilibrium properties of open quantum systems, the Fermi Golden Rule and weak coupling limit, quantum irreversibility and decoherence, qualitative behaviour of quantum Markov semigroups and continual quantum measurements.

This thesis presents a general theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for information processing. Ever since Maxwell's demon was proposed in the nineteenth century, the relationship between thermodynamics and information has attracted much attention because it concerns the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics. From the modern point of view, Maxwell's demon is formulated as an information processing device that performs measurement and feedback at the level of thermal fluctuations. By unifying information theory, measurement theory, and the recently developed theory of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, the author has constructed a theory of "information thermodynamics," in which information contents and thermodynamic variables are treated on an equal footing. In particular, the maximum work that can be extracted by the demon and the minimum work that is needed for measurement and information erasure by the demon has been determined. Additionally, generalizations of nonequilibrium relations such as a Jarzynski equality for classical stochastic systems in the presence of feedback control have been derived. One of the generalized equalities has recently been verified experimentally by using sub-micron colloidal particles. The results obtained serve as fundamental principles for information processing in small thermodynamic systems, and are applicable to nanomachines and nanodevices.

Quantum Mechanics written by Horatiu Nastase and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-04 with Science categories.

Written for a two-semester graduate course in Quantum Mechanics, this comprehensive text helps develop the tools and formalism of Quantum Mechanics and its applications to physical systems. It suits students who have taken some introductory Quantum Mechanics and Modern Physics courses at undergraduate level, but it is self-contained and does not assume any specific background knowledge beyond appropriate fluency in mathematics. The text takes a modern logical approach rather than a historical one and it covers standard material, such as the hydrogen atom and the harmonic oscillator, the WKB approximations and Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization. Important modern topics and examples are also described, including Berry phase, quantum information, complexity and chaos, decoherence and thermalization, nonstandard statistics, as well as more advanced material such as path integrals, scattering theory, multiparticles and Fock space. Readers will gain a broad overview of Quantum Mechanics, as solid preparation for further study or research.

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a successful framework providing criteria for thermalization in isolated quantum systems. Although numerical and theoretical analyses support the ETH as a fundamental mechanism for explaining thermalization in diverse systems, it remains a challenge to analytically identify whether particular systems satisfy the ETH. In quantum many-body systems and quantum field theories, phenomena that violate the ETH are expected to imply nontrivial thermalization processes, and are gathering increasing attention. This book elucidates how the existence of higher-form symmetries influences the dynamics of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. Under reasonable assumptions, it is analytically shown that a p-form symmetry in a (d+1)-dimensional quantum field theory leads to the breakdown of the ETH for many nontrivial (d−p)-dimensional observables. In the case of discrete higher-form (i.e., p ≥ 1) symmetry, this indicates the absence of thermalization for observables that are non-local but much smaller than the entire system size even though the system do have no local conserved quantities. The author provides numerical evidence for this argument for the (2+1)-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory. While local observables such as a plaquette operator thermalize even for mixed symmetry sectors, the non-local observable such as the one exciting a magnetic dipole instead relaxes to the generalized Gibbs ensemble that takes account of the Z2 1-form symmetry. The assumptions of the ETH-violation include the mixing of symmetry sectors within a given energy shell. This condition is rather challenging to verify because it requires information on the eigenstates in the middle of the spectrum. In the subsequent chapter, we further reconsider this assumption from the viewpoint of a projective phase to alleviate this difficulty. In the case of ZN symmetries, the difficulty can be circumvented considering ZN×ZN-symmetric theories with a projective phase, and then perturbing the Hamiltonian while preserving one of the ZN symmetries of interest. Additionally, the book also presents numerical analyses for (1+1)-dimensional spin chains and the (2+1)-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory to demonstrate this scenario.

In this book, Robert Wald provides a coherent, pedagogical introduction to the formulation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. He begins with a treatment of the ordinary one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, progresses through the construction of quantum field theory in flat spacetime to possible constructions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, and, ultimately, to an algebraic formulation of the theory. In his presentation, Wald disentangles essential features of the theory from inessential ones (such as a particle interpretation) and clarifies relationships between various approaches to the formulation of the theory. He also provides a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the Unruh effect, the Hawking effect, and some of its ramifications. In particular, the subject of black hole thermodynamics, which remains an active area of research, is treated in depth. This book will be accessible to students and researchers who have had introductory courses in general relativity and quantum field theory, and will be of interest to scientists in general relativity and related fields.

During the last three decades supersymmetry has grown into one of the busiest theoretical avenues of particle physics. Supersymmetric ideas dominate the scenario of “beyond the standard model phenomenology”, in spite of the thirty-year-old experimental opacity, a situation that could change within the following decade. One additional important reason for the good health of supersymmetry must be found in the most speculative areas of particle physics. Much of its success comes from superstring theory. The Advanced School on Supersymmetry in the Theories of Fields, Strings and Branes attempted to provide an up-to-date perspective of the role played by supersymmetry in these subjects. The lectures dealt with most of the main theoretical developments of the nineties, from the exact solutions of the Seiberg-Witten type to the physics of D-branes and their impact on the physics of black holes and string phenomenology. Many of these results are contrasted with the recent results on the holographic duality between string theories in anti-de Sitter spaces and certain large N conformal gauge theories, the so-called “Maldacena conjecture”, or “AdS/CFT correspondence”. The lecture notes contained in this volume are the result of the effort made by the lecturers to introduce the reader to these topics, assuming a basic knowledge of supersymmetry, quantum field theory and string theory.
