The migration of highly skilled individuals brings together two important and well-developed institutional systems: on the one hand, the organization of professions and, on the other hand, the state and its migration and integration regime. Therefore, professional migrants move between two levels of regulation. The first one applies to their specific professional group and regulates the acquisition of knowledge as well as the participation in the labor market. The second one controls the access to and settlement in a given country. Taking the examples of medicine and the information technologies (IT) in Germany and Chile, the present research asks how different institutional settings shape the cultural capital negotiation strategies of highly skilled Latin American migrants. Using Bourdieu’s relational theory and especially his concepts of field and capital, this book seeks to understand professions as fields and to follow the trajectories of highly skilled Latin American migrants within two transnational professional fields. Using a reconstructive praxeological approach, this book presents three typologies, showing how the interaction between (transnational) professional fields and national regulations creates different possibilities for highly skilled migrants to negotiate their capital and the strategies they develop to reach a good position in their host country’s labor market.

Angesichts der alltäglichen und allgegenwärtigen „Interkultur“ wird die qualitative Sozialforschung zunehmend mit Problemen konfrontiert, die mit ihren herkömmlichen Verfahren nicht mehr angemessen analysierbar sind – sei es, weil sie im eigenen Land auf das Miteinander unterschiedlicher Kulturen stößt und für deren Untersuchung über keine geeigneten Methoden verfügt, oder sei es, weil sie mit Daten arbeitet, die aus anderen Kulturkreisen stammen. Auch hier sind angemessene Methoden Mangelware. Eng damit verbunden ist ein weiteres, nicht zu unterschätzendes Problem Qualitativer Sozialforschung. Immer öfter sind die Interpretationsgruppen nicht mehr „monokulturell“ zusammengesetzt. Immer häufiger bestehen diese Gruppen aus Interpreten, die – kulturell betrachtet – divergente Interpretationshorizonte besitzen. Bei allen genannten Problemstellungen tauchen auf methodischer und methodologischer Ebene völlig neue Fragen für die Forschungspraxis auf.

We live in challenging and uncertain times, with profound implications for the purpose and nature of education. In her research R. Nazlı Somel focuses on the topic of educational inequality, both from a theoretical perspective and through an empirical analysis. After a review of prominent approaches to educational inequality and their criticism, she offers a novel strategy to study the issue based on Relational Sociology and using the relational approaches of Charles Tilly and Pierre Bourdieu. Three relational characteristics of educational inequality are identified that are its relativity, cumulativeness, and being an organized practice. The author then applies this relational perspective to an in-depth study on an Istanbul primary school, analyses students, teachers and school organization in relation to each other and to Turkish education system and society.

Constanze Volkmann develops an innovative new gender theory labeled doing and undoing gender. Based on empirical findings she examines the highly debated intersection of gender and Islam. The analysis of interviews with various Muslim women unravels the many different ways in which gender is done and undone. Especially with regard to potential gender hierarchies, the results reveal that the category ‘gender’ is irrelevant to many Muslim women and is even used as a means to foster their status and power as women. This book makes a substantial contribution to a differentiated social debate at eye level with Muslim women.
