„Fortece Rzeczypospolitej” to tytuł konstytucji sejmowej z 1658 roku wyodrębniającej grupę twierdz ważnych dla bezpieczeństwa całego państwa. Dokonujący się w epoce nowożytnej przełom w technice wojennej, związany z rozwojem broni palnej, miał wielorakie konsekwencje w sferze militarnej, ale także politycznej, ustrojowej i gospodarczej. Jedną z nich było powstanie i rozwój nowego typu fortyfikacji, w założeniu odpornych na użycie artylerii ogniowej, które symbolizuje pięcioboczny bastion. Przemiany w technice wojennej nakładały się na rozwój państwa w epoce nowożytnej, często ewoluującej w kierunku scentralizowanej monarchii absolutnej i także dążącego do podporządkowania sobie całej sery militarnej, w tym fortec. W książce poddano analizie procesy powstawania fortyfikacji stałych w polsko-litewskiej Rzeczypospolitej, przy jej politycznej i ustrojowej specyfice, od inicjatywy, poprzez decyzję w obudowie, procedury tworzenia projektu, aż po realizację inwestycji w złożonych realiach społecznych i gospodarczych tego państwa. Jednym z ważnych problemów poruszonych w książce jest pytanie, na ile także w przypadku państwa polsko-litewskiego możemy mówić o aktywności instytucji państwowych w tym obszarze oraz o tworzeniu systemu lub systemów obronnych chroniących kraj przed licznymi zagrożeniami zewnętrznymi.

This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age.
