Fortresses and Treasures of Roman Wales details all the fortresses built in Roman Wales during the first century, including all the excavations that have brought these once powerful structures back to life, giving us a wealth of information as to how they functioned and how the soldiers lived. Their foundations have shown us how large they were and where they were placed. We even know what colour some of their internal walls were. And through the discovery of various pottery, we know what utensils the soldiers used for cooking, eating and drinking. We also know how the soldiers spent their leisure hours and what games they played. The soldiers were provided with luxurious bathing facilities even in remote areas, and the remains of these once splendid buildings can still be seen at Caerleon, and Wroxeter (now Shropshire). Two of the great amphitheatres where the soldiers were entertained and held ceremonial parades are also included and can be seen at Caerleon and Chester. The book also tells how little communities sprung up outside the fortresses' walls, with the soldiers trading with the local people and, in some cases, marrying and deciding to retire in the locality.

Roman Fortresses And Their Legions written by Richard J. Brewer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

Roman Fortresses and their Legions had its origins in a conference held in 1992, and contains 11 papers by leading Roman military archaeologists on the fortresses of Roman legions from Britain, Germany and the Danube region to the eastern empire. It will appeal to both general and specialist readers interested in Roman military archaeology. Historians, including the pioneer antiquaries, have long realised that the study of the legions is fundamental to our understanding of the history of the Roman Empire. The essays in this volume, contributed by some of today's foremost scholars of Roman army studies, range across the whole of the Roman Empire - including Britain, the Danube lands and the eastern provinces - and cover a wide variety of themes. Authors effectively combine evidence derived from ancient sources and inscriptions with the rapidly growing amount of information and detail obtained from archaeological excavation. The volume covers the period from Augustus, when the plans of permanent legionary fortresses were beginning to evolve, to the Late Empire, when the legion was a very different body from that with which we are familiar in the early imperial period. The essays are dedicated to the late George C Boon FSA, FRHistS to mark his vast contribution to Roman scholarship.

In 1277, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Prince of Gwynedd, met with Edward I of England in Aberconwy to finalise a treaty that would change the fate of both nations. His hand forced by Edward’s invasion earlier that year, Llywelyn’s acceptance of the terms confirmed not only short-term peace but also that the rule of Wales would pass to Edward on his death. To augment his rising dominance, the English king embarked on a building project that saw the rise of some of the most recognisable fortresses in Europe. Quite literally, an ‘Iron Ring’ of castles. Even before the construction of Edward’s infamous ‘Iron Ring’, castles were by no means rare in Wales. Both before and simultaneous to William the Conqueror’s establishment of timber and stone fortresses in the south and borderlands, a process continued by many of his descendants, native structures also existed. Though often more palatial than protective, such constructions proved decisive to the ongoing wars and were often chosen as sites for future castles. Just as had been the case in England, the story of the castle crosses many centuries. Many began as Roman forts, whereas others date from more modern times. While many are now romantic ruins, others remain cherished family homes, if not hotels or museums. By adopting an identical approach to that seen in Castles of England, the purpose of this book is to throw light on the stories behind them. For as long as there have been castles in Wales, there have been mysteries within their walls. Murders that remain unsolved, treasures unfound, prisoners left to rot in the darkest pits and valiant warriors whose heroic deeds have become a cherished part of the Welsh identity. From blood-soaked heroes to long-lost legends, despotic pirates to wailing hags, Castles of Wales offers a fresh investigation into many of its fascinating fortresses. No country has more castles per square mile than Wales. Even today, there are more than 200 to be enjoyed. Inspired by such a rich tapestry of tales, this book provides an essential introduction to the nation many regard as ‘The Land of Castles’.

Sir John Pryce of Newtown Hall died in 1761. He kept the embalmed bodies of his first two wives on either side of his bed – until his third wife insisted that they were removed. In 1856 Ronald Rhys from the Vale of Neath disappeared for a week after seeing a strange light in a field and hearing a loud noise. He remembered being examined by small creatures who took a sample of his blood. Oh yes, and America is named after a Welshman and the Holy Grail is kept in a bank vault in West Wales... This book contains hundreds of 'strange but true' facts and anecdotes about Welsh history. Arranged into a miniature history of Wales, and with bizarre and hilarious true tales for every era, it will interest and delight readers everywhere.
