I recently employed Chinese symbolism in producing five newly designed packs of cards. Images of all of the cards were published by Amazon, introducing new concepts in the design of playing cards. Now I have progressed further in designing three more card packs largely inspired by Chinese culture. The first game in this book, Fortune Stars, is based on my drawings of the Five Stars of Good Fortune, Lu Xing the Star of Emolument and High Salaries, Fu Xing the Star of Good Fortune, Shou Xing the Star of Longevity, Xi Shen the God of Happiness and Cai Shen the God of Wealth. I have emphasized the relationship of these five with the Five Elements of ancient Chinese Daoism in their Generating Arrangement which in turn can be related to the five ancient Greek Elements (including Ether or Spirit). The alignment of these concepts goes further and includes the five seasons, directions, and mountains of Daoism as well as the Five Great Ancient Capitals of China. The Four Great Heavenly Kings found in most Chinese temples and the Earth God plus the five legendary emperors of ancient China are additional groups of five forming suits in this new card pack. Then the five Chinese planets known in antiquity, together with the five Western planets, are aligned with the five animals of the Fortune Stars and their five symbols of prosperity. Finally the five auspicious animals, including the mythical qi lin, golden money toad and dragon tortoise, contribute to this new concept in playing cards making 14 suits in all, with 5 cards in each displaying vivid images of Chinese culture. The next pack of cards in this book, Immortals, is devoted to the Eight Immortals of Daoism together with their Eight Ritual Implements. These are then related to the Eight Auspicious Buddhist Treasures as well as the Eight Trigrams (or Ba Gua) of Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven and the Eight Martial Arts Trigrams. They make 6 suits of eight cards in a colourful game, shining light on deeply held Chinese beliefs of a thousand years ago, many of which continue to sustain credence today. The third pack of cards, Dragon Sons, has five suits with nine cards in each. One suit contains images of the Nine Sons of the Dragon, many of which are still visible as sculptures on rooftops and in doorways of ancient buildings. A second suit displays images of the Nine Great Emperors representing the Nine Northern Dipper Stars. The third and fourth suits are devoted to the Nine Chinese Imperial Civil and Military Rank insignia. These large, colourful, rank badges, measuring about 10 or 11 inches square, covered the chest of senior Chinese civil and military personnel up to 1911 when the Qing Dynasty was overthrown. They may interest collectors of military insignia and students of the armed forces and uniforms of the old imperial powers. Then a fifth suit displays the Chinese single-digit numbers 1 to 9 which are found on mah-jong tiles. Those who have previously purchased The Invention of Playing Cards in China, their Arrival in Europe and their Role in the Development of Mahjong or New Concepts in Playing Cards and Tarot: Five Newly Designed Packs of Cards with Chinese Symbolism, may like to include this new volume in their collection.

"One of the most exciting recent developments in the study of Chinese literature has been the rediscovery of an extremely rich and diverse tradition of women’s writing of the imperial period (221 B.C.E.–1911 C.E.). Many of these writings are of considerable literary quality. Others provide us with moving insights into the lives and feelings of a surprisingly diverse group of women living in Confucian China, a society that perhaps more than any other is known for its patriarchal tradition.Because of the burgeoning interest in the study of both premodern and modern women in China, several scholarly books, articles, and even anthologies of women’s poetry have been published in the last two decades. This anthology differs from previous works by offering a glimpse of women’s writings not only in poetry but in other genres as well, including essays and letters, drama, religious writing, and narrative fiction. The authors have presented the selections within their respective biographical and historical contexts. This comprehensive approach helps to clarify traditional Chinese ideas on the nature and function of literature as well as on the role of the woman writer."

This book displays images of cards designed for new card games based on the 88 constellations, the 12 signs of the zodiac, as well as the planets, dwarf planets, minor planets and their moons. The historical and cultural origins of the 215 images I have drawn for these card games are fully explained in 220 pages of text. Ancient legends surrounding the Ptolemaic constellations are examined in detail as are the Greco-Roman myths related to the planets and their moons. Chinese mythology related to the Shang Dynasty sun birds, the moon goddess Chang E and the Chinese equivalent of planet Venus are also included. The first game arranges the 88 constellations around the celestial sphere and divides them into four suits. There is a special symbol for each of the four suits and each suit contains three signs of the zodiac. There are also families of cards which have special scores. The constellations of the larger and smaller bear, the larger and smaller dog, Leo and the smaller lion and other similar pairs have a special function in the game. The next game, of 126 cards, is based on the sun, planets and moons of the solar system. There are four basic suits which include 10 images of the sun, followed by 10 images of the planets, dwarf planets and minor planets. Then there are four dependent suits (or sub-suits) of 13 cards for the 13 largest moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The images of the sun include Greco-Roman images of Helios and Sol Invictus "the Invincible Sun." These are complemented by an image of Pharaoh Akhenaten (reign 1353-1336 BC) making offerings to the Egyptian sun god Aten. Then the emphasis shifts back to 1600 BC, to the Chinese Shang Dynasty when people believed that the 10 suns of a 10-day week were carried across the sky by 10 sun birds. I have created an image of a sun bird resting with its sun in the Fu Sang Tree in the east and preparing for its long flight across the sky. On arrival in the far west it needs to cool off and extinguish the flames of its sun in the waters of the dark Yu Gu Valley and then sleep in the Ruo Mu Tree before taking the extinguished sun back to the east to begin the procedure again. There is also a card devoted to the Chinese culture hero Fu Xi carrying the sun and its sun bird. He was regarded as a sun god during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD). The suit of planets is next and it also has 10 cards even though there are only eight planets in the solar system, including Earth. A Chinese female version of the planet Venus together with grey-haired Tai Bai Jin Xing brings the number to 10. Then there are four images of Earth's moon, two of them of Greco-Roman origin and two of Chinese origin. The Chinese moon goddess Chang E is one of them and Nu Wa the wife of Fu Xi is the other. Nu Wa was regarded as a moon goddess during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Four dependent suits (or sub-suits) of the 13 largest moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are used in this game. The idea of a suit within a suit was inspired by my study of the numbering systems of the world entitled The Book of Numbers: Images of the World's Ancient and Modern Numerals with Explanations, Amazon 2017. There we can see a base-10 system within a base-60 system employed by the ancient Babylonians and the ancient Mayan base-20 system has a base-5 concept in the design of symbols. The remaining two suits are of 10 Dwarf Planets with 13 of their moons and 10 Minor Planets with 13 moons. My books on playing cards include the following: The Invention of Playing Cards in China, their Arrival in Europe and their Role in the Development of Mahjong, Amazon 2016; New Concepts in Playing Cards and Tarot: Five Newly Designed Packs of Cards with Chinese Symbolism, Amazon 2016; A Chinese Version of Tarot explained in Detail: Five Suits based on the Five Elements, Amazon 2017; Fortune Stars, Immortals and Dragon Sons: Three Newly Designed Packs of Cards based on Chinese Cultural Concepts, Amazon 2017.

This book contains hundreds of images depicting some of the basic components of Chinese culture such as the 5 Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water and their relationship to the ancient Greek elements of Air, Fire, Earth, Aether and Water. The 5 Elements of ancient China relate to the days of the modern Japanese week and illustrations of these are included. The 7 Chinese Luminaries are also depicted showing Fu Xi as a sun god and Nu Wa as a moon goddess as well as an ancient female version of Tai Bai Jin Xing the Chinese equivalent of Venus. Then images of the animals of the 28 Chinese Lunar Mansions form a lunar month of 28 days while the 12 months of the year are represented by the monthly flowers on Japanese Flower Cards. Images of the 12 Earthly Branches, represented by 12 animals related to the year of a person's birth, are also shown. The 10 Heavenly Stems combined with the 12 Earthly Branches give us the 60 year cycle of the traditional Chinese calendar. Events in China during a sixty year period from 1864 to 1924 give us glimpses of China's turbulent history. There are also the 24 Chinese Solar Terms which for centuries have been essential tools for predicting the weather and deciding when to plant and harvest crops. Then the almost exact correlation between 12 of the Solar Terms and the 12 signs of the Western Zodiac give us a different perspective. The 5 Seasons, 5 Directions, 5 Emperors and 5 Mountains of Daoism are also illustrated and the 10 Suns which were thought to travel across the sky from east to west in a 10 day week during the ancient Shang Dynasty are depicted together with the 9 Northern Dipper Stars and the 6 Southern Dipper Stars. Illustrations of the 8 Trigrams, known in Chinese as the Ba Gua, show the Earlier Heaven, Later Heaven and Martial Arts variations with their topographical and climate features such as Marsh, Mountain, Wind, and Thunder together with their animals. Then we progress to the Chinese concepts of good luck, fortune and wealth with depictions of the Five Stars of Good Fortune, and their symbolic animals the Bat, Deer, Magpie, Crane, and Fish. Following these are the Five Auspicious Animals and more than a dozen Gods of Fortune including Cai Shen and Zhao Gong Ming who rode a tiger. There are also images of the Nine Sons of the Dragon which bring protection and good fortune. The 8 Auspicious Buddhist Treasures are symbols depicted in public places not only for their artistic and aesthetic value but also as signs of good luck and prosperity. The Temple Door Guardians Heng and Ha give protection, and statues of the Four Great Heavenly Kings stand further inside a temple symbolizing defence of religious beliefs and doctrines. There are also warnings to believers such as that symbolized by the Pig, Snake and Bird in the hub of the Tibetan Wheel of Life. Mythical, quasi-historical figures such as the Lord of Millet Hou Ji and his Mother Jiang Yuan are also depicted. And the sage emperors Yao and Shun are followed by Yu the Great, the founder of China's first dynasty. The full set of animals on the roofs of Beijing's Imperial Palace are clearly depicted and so are the many spirit way animals and figures from the Ming Tombs, the tomb of General Li Jie in Nanjing and the tomb of Empress Wu Ze Tian west of Xi An. Then the concept of rank is displayed with the 12 Ranking Symbols on Imperial Costumes. Following this we see vivid depictions of Military and Civil rank badges from Imperial China and there are also images of the military and civilian suits of the game of Chinese dominoes. Finally the Chinese game of Chess is illustrated with appropriate images such as military generals, horses, soldiers and cannons. Images of a full pack of a newly-created Chinese version of Tarot with some Mahjong borrowings have also been included. The hundreds of pictures as well as legendary and historical figures are all listed in a 10 page index so that items of interest can be quickly found.

This book, which introduces a Chinese version of Tarot, is also about Chinese and Greco-Roman mythology and it relates to the passing of time and the calendar. It contains more than 1000 pencil drawings with captions in English and Chinese and 48 in English and Japanese. These images are in a format suitable for imprinting on playing cards. The book begins with the Five Elements of ancient China: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water and connects them to the elements devised by the Greek philosopher Empedocles. There are images of the 24 Solar Terms into which the Chinese year is divided and each of the 48 Japanese Flower Cards which represent the months January to December. Then there are the images of the 12 signs of the Western Zodiac and the 28 Chinese Lunar Mansions. Each of these images is imprinted with one of the 5 Chinese elements. This concept is carried further with images of 112 chemical elements and the 88 constellations. Images of the planets and their moons followed by the dwarf planets and potential dwarf planets such as Pluto, Haumea, and Eris and their moons are also included. Following this, a selection of 120 asteroids and 4 comets are depicted. Images are created according to Greco-Roman and Chinese myths associated with the names of celestial bodies. The ancient Chinese concept of the Limitless Cosmic First Principle or Wu Ji, followed by the two forms Yin and Yang and the 4 Phenomena, produce the Supreme Ultimate or Great Absolute Tai Ji. This theme continues with pictorial representations of the 8 Trigrams of Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven which interact with the 5 Elements in the material world in which we live. Then the 64 Hexagrams of the Book of Changes or Yi Jing offer possibilities for deciding on your future based on the inevitability of change and its consequences. Finally a Chinese version of Tarot has been created with suits based on the 5 Elements of ancient China and drawing on images from Mahjong and China's traditional playing cards. This book on mythology verges on the realms not only of astrology and fortune telling but also of astronomy and history. There are pictorial images of China's 77th 60 Year Cycle from 1864/65 to 1923/24. The corresponding years of the current 79th Cycle are also placed beside those historical images. For example, the Chinese cruiser Ding Yuan is shown damaged by enemy action in 1895 in the 32nd year of the 77th Cycle. In 2015 we are in the 32nd year of the 79th Cycle and we hope there will not be a repeat of hostile naval action. Other interesting images are of the 9 Northern and 6 Southern Dipper Stars, the 9 Sons of the Dragon, the 8 Immortals of Daoism, the 5 Fortune Stars and 5 Auspicious Animals. The Tarot cards include the 4 Mahjong Seasons and 4 Flowers as well as the 4 Pastimes and 4 Professions plus the Cat, Mouse, Cockerel and Centipede. The tarot suits follow themes related to their elements. For example, the suit of Cups is related to the element Water and contains images of China's ancient mariners followed by Chinese equivalents of Page, Knight, Queen and King. The Dragon and Phoenix of early 20th Century Mahjong have been reintroduced and the Major Arcana contains a Chinese alchemist instead of a magician while "the Tower" is Lei Feng Pagoda near Hangzhou which collapsed in 1924. The cards are related to one another and cross referenced where possible. For example, if your star sign is Gemini, it is related to the Chinese element 2 Fire, the Major Arcana image 6 "the Lovers" and the modern constellation 27 also called Gemini. If you are born in the year of the Rabbit (Earthly Branch 4) then there is a relationship with the Chinese element Wood, the direction East, the modern constellation 20 Lepus the Hare as well as Lunar Mansion 4 Rabbit which in turn relates to day 7 Sunday and the first week of the month. The book is provided with a detailed index of nearly 1500 entries to enable users to quickly and easily find things that interest the
