Excerpt from The Social Evolution of the Argentine Republic The administration of Avellaneda continued the task of combating such tendencies by the establishment of the telegraph which would unite all these centers to each other; by the construction of railroads to facilitate communication; and by the encouragement of European immigration for purposes of settlement and in order to mix other races with that of Argentine and so modify its political idiosyncracies by more conservative standards and interests. The conquest of the Patagonian wilds, with the final subjugation of the warlike native tribes of the south, opened and ushered in an era in the 'argentine evolution. This occurred contemporaneously with the historic solution of the problem of federalism versus centralism, which silenced forever the old antagonism between the inhabitants of the metropolis and those of the provinces. Argentina And The Argentines written by Thomas A. Turner and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-26 with History categories.

Excerpt from Argentina and the Argentines: Notes and Impressions of a Five Years' Sojourn in the Argentine Republic, 1885-90 This volume pretends to be nothing more than its subsidiary title indicates; namely, a series of "Notes" or sketches of Argentina and the Argentines, made during a sojourn of nearly six years in Buenos Ayres. Of the imperfections and shortcomings of the "Notes," no one could be more sensible than the writer of them. Begun hardly in earnest; without connection, continuity, or definite plan; they may be compared rather to instantaneous photographs taken at haphazard, and which depict alike the natural and the ludicrous, than to elaborate and carefully studied pictures. In addition to other inconveniences, the writer had the misfortune to lose, during the troublous times following the Revolution of July, 1890, a large collection of shorthand notes relating chiefly to the events of the years 1886-87 - a loss which it was impossible to repair, and which has compelled him to trust to his memory for some of the particulars related in the book; and although pains have been taken to verify, as far as was possible at this distance of time and place, the particulars referred to, it is not improbable that some inaccuracies of detail may have crept into the descriptions, and equally possible that the "Notes" which have been perforce omitted might have been found more interesting and instructive than those which are now given. Excerpt from Life in the Argentine Republic in the Days of the Tyrants: Or Civilization and Barbarism Since the translation of this work by Colonel Sarmiento was begun, the tide of events has carried its author to the proudest position before his country which any man since San Martin, the hero of its independence and of the independence of some of its sister Republics, has ever occupied. It is true that circumstances of even a trivial nature, and still more frequently of a corrupt nature, often bring a man to the chieftainship of his country, whether the office is elective or otherwise; but in this instance such circumstances have been singularly wanting.
