Excerpt from Forty Years of Spy I have often been asked to record my recollections and impressions of the many interesting men and women I have met in the course of my long professional career as a cartoonist and portrait painter, when - particularly during my association with Vanity Fair - I met practically every person of note in the London world of the last forty years. I have at length succumbed to the invitation. Unfortunately I have never kept a diary, and my main source of reminiscence must therefore be my memory; and had that been as lasting for the important events of later life as it has been for lesser occasions of inexperienced youth, my book would be the more entertaining. Certainly a journal of the talk and wit my studio has heard would have been of great interest. I have always encouraged my sitters to talk, and I only wish I could have remembered all the conversations that passed in those pleasant days and the amusing stories told to me; but it has not been possible to retain them in a comprehensive degree - when I was engrossed in the study of my subject and the resultant presentation of his features and personality. Excerpt from The World's Greatest Military Spies and Secret Service Agents The romance of war in its most thrilling form is exemplified in this narrative of the adventures of The World's Greatest Military Spies and Secret Service Agents. Much has been published upon the subject of espionage, and the memoirs and secret histories of the courts of Europe give us instances of men and women who have gained favor and money, if not honor and glory, by selling back-stairs gossip concern ing their fellow creatures; but the aim of the present work has been rather to relate the big exploits of those who faced great personal danger and risked their lives for the sake of flag and country. Excerpt from The Search for the Spy, the Adventures of an American Boy, at the Outbreak of the War A man fifty years of age said to the writer not long ago that if it had been in his power to select his time to live he would have chosen the half-century which had fallen to him. Certainly the world has never seen more momentous deeds than those which the year 1914 has witnessed. Perhaps it never will see the like again. American boys are deeply interested in the war in Europe, because not only is it a gigantic struggle, but their own future will be largely influenced by the outcome. The fear of spies in London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Petrograd and in other cities has been one of the early and pronounced facts. The writer has tried to present a picture of the big war which should be interesting but free from sensationalism. It is his hope that his boy friends will continue their reading beyond these stories until they shall have obtained a clear knowledge of this great war of the nations, - its causes, deeds and results. Whatever one's feelings may be concerning war itself, there surely can be no question as to the desirability of a clear understanding of the contest. Excerpt from A Searchlight on Germany: Germany's Blunders, Crimes and Punishment The blunders of Germany constitute a spectacle of very much more than passing interest. The questions they raise are by no means academic. The logic of them is as inexorable as Death. They are of vital interest to every freeman, and to every state and nation that sincerely undertakes to con serve the rights of its people. To unhappy Austria, shoved into the war by Germany, they are of life or death interest. A correct view of Germany is now absolutely essential to the future freedom of man!
