An armored unit that has always aroused curiosity and interest, the Armored Group of the “Leoncello” was one of the few armored units of the Italian Social Republic, the only one of the Tanker specialty. Until a few years ago, the information relating to this department was very scarce and could only be deduced from some very short excerpts from an autobiographical volume by Gian Carlo Zuccaro, commander of the “Leoncello”, and from the brief historical summary presented by Giorgio Pisanò in his famous work of 1960s “The last ones in Grigioverde”, a synthesis that was plagued, however, by many historical errors. With the publication of the book by Sergio Corbatti and Marco Nava “Come il Diamante!” many aspects of the short operational life of this tank department have been clarified. The discovery and analysis of a series of previously unknown documents allowed the author to further investigate the subject. This volume therefore presents the story of the “Leoncello”, from the conception, fruit of his vigorous commander Captain Zuccaro, from his birth at the Carristi Depot in Verona, to his epilogue in the days of the partisan insurrection.

With the proclamation of the Armistice, the whole territory that included Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Provinces of Ljubljana and Istria, considered of vital importance for the communication lines and for the supply of the German Army in Italy, was absorbed by the Reich, under the jurisdictional form of the so-called Zone of Operations of the Adriatic Coast (O.Z.A.K.). The government of the R.S.I. attempted to restore its authority in the O.Z.A.K. even in the military field, but German interference was always fierce. The reconstituted Legions of the M.V.S.N. were prevented to join the G.N.R. and the Germans imposed on these units the denomination of Territorial Defense Militia (Milizia Difesa Territoriale M.D.T.), formally part of the G.N.R., but autonomous in the reality. The M.D.T. was configured as a "Landschutz", that is a defense unit of the territory. In parallel, the Prefect Coceani and the Podestà Pagnini promoted the establishment of a self-defense unit, the Civic Guard, in Trieste, an example followed in other cities in the region.

The goal we have set ourselves with this series of four volumes, written in four hands, is to give an overall picture of the Divisions formed by the Army of the R.S.I. to the departments used in the fight against the partisans by the Republican National Army, starting from the last months of 1943, offering a purely military point of view, free from judgments of any kind. The purpose of "continuing the war" had always been present since the beginning of autumn 1943 in the military authorities of the Social Republic. During talks between three Mussolini and Hitler it was agreed to form a new fascist army, which, in the intentions of the Fuhrer, was to be made up of an army of 10/15 divisions. In reality, only 4 were planned and formed by the Republican National Army: 1st Bersaglieri Division "Italy", 2nd Grenadiers Division "Littorio", 3rd Marine Division "San Marco", 4th Alpine Division "Monterosa". This first volume is dedicated to the Division “Italy”, which operated on the southern front in Garfagnana, against the Allies, until the end of the conflict.

Dopo l'armistizio di Cassibile del settembre 1943 Il proposito di "continuare la guerra" fu alla base di buona parte dei soldati e generali avversi a tradire l'alleato tedesco. Esso fu una costante sempre presente nella natura del fascismo repubblicano fino dalla sua fondazione. Durante i colloqui svoltisi al Quartier generale del Fuhrer, Mussolini e Hitler concordarono quindi la formazione di un nuovo esercito fascista: Hitler aveva intenzione, inizialmente, di far istituire un'armata di circa 10 o 15 divisioni, ma poi nella sua direttiva per l'attuazione del piano ne furono previste solo quattro. Mussolini tornato in Italia ad ottobre elaborò insieme al neo-ministro della difesa maresciallo Rodolfo Graziani la ricostituzione dell'esercito: venne considerata realistica la prospettiva di arruolare ben 500.000 militari, con i quali armare 25 divisioni, delle quali 5 corazzate e 10 motorizzate. Il progetto, però apparve subito alquanto pretenzioso e in definitiva impossibile da attuare. Alla fine le forze armate e di combattimento della RSI furono essenzialmente composte dalle truppe appartenenti all'Esercito Nazionale Repubblicano, della Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana, delle Brigate Nere e altre formazioni come la Xa MAS, un'unità speciale della Marina repubblicana.

Lo sbando generale causato dall'Armistizio dell'8 settembre ebbe ripercussioni immediate anche sui reparti di Bersaglieri, sia presenti nella Penisola, sia all'Estero. I Bersaglieri però furono tra i primi a riorganizzarsi ed a riprendere le armi, sia al Sud, dove a fine settembre 1943 il LI Battaglione Bersaglieri d'istruzione Allievi Ufficiali di Complemento fu inserito nel Primo Raggruppamento Motorizzato, sia al Nord, dove in breve tempo si costituirono il Battaglione Bersaglieri "Mussolini", il Reggimento Bersaglieri "Luciano Manara" ed il 3° Reggimento Volontari.

Con la proclamazione dell’Armistizio, tutto il territorio che comprendeva le Province del Friuli-Venezia Giulia, la Provincia di Lubiana e l’Istria, considerato di vitale importanza per le linee di comunicazione e per il rifornimento dell’esercito tedesco in Italia, di fatto assorbito dal Reich, sotto la forma giurisdizionale della cosiddetta Zona di operazioni del Litorale Adriatico. Il governo della R.S.I. tentò di ristabilire la propria autorità nell’O.Z.A.K. anche in ambito militare, ma l’ingerenza tedesca fu sempre feroce. Fu impedito alle ricostituite Legioni della M.V.S.N. di confluire nella G.N.R. ed i tedeschi imposero a queste unità la denominazione di Milizia Difesa Territoriale (M.D.T.), formalmente parte della G.N.R., ma nella realtà autonoma. LA M.D.T. si configurò come “Landschutz”, cioè una unità di difesa del territorio. Parallelamente il Prefetto Coceani ed il Podestà Pagnini promossero la costituzione di un’unità di autodifesa, la Guardia Civica, a Trieste, esempio seguito in altre città della regione.

Il Regno d’Italia vantava già dal 1912 il possedimento delle Isole del Dodecaneso e dal 1926 il protettorato sull’Albania e, con questi presupposti, dopo l’occupazione del Regno di Albania del 1939 e lo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale l’anno successivo, Mussolini concentrò i suoi sforzi contro la Grecia, iniziando nell’ottobre 1940 una disastrosa campagna militare, che costrinse il Reich tedesco ad un massiccio intervento a sostegno delle Forze Armate Italiane nei Balcani. La debolezza militare italiana trasformò così quella che poteva considerarsi per l’Italia una guerra “parallela” per assicurarsi il controllo di Albania, Grecia e Jugoslavia, in una guerra subordinata alla Germania. In questo volume si prende in analisi la storia delle unità corazzate impegnate nei Balcani dal Regio Esercito e, dopo l’8 settembre 1943, dai reparti della Repubblica Sociale, dalle unità tedesche, croate, slovene e dei partigiani, che dopo l’Armistizio poterono fare confluire nelle loro fila larga parte dei mezzi corazzati italiani abbandonati.
