A revolution spurred by expanded use of renewable biobased products and bioenergy will have enormous impacts in the 21st century. Today America depends on biomass to provide 3 percent of its energy and more than 300 billion pounds of products annually. Yet, propelled by advances in biological and physical sciences and engineering, America has the opportunity to greatly accelerate its use of biomass. This revolution will have important impacts on our: 1) Economy; 2) Environment; 3) Energy Security; and 4) Competitive position.

The Revolution. A revolution spurred by expanded use of renewable biobased products and bioenergy will have enormous impacts in the 21st century. Today, America depends on biomass to provide 3 percent of its energy and more than 300 billion pounds of products annually. Yet, propelled by advances in biological and physical sciences and engineering, America has the opportunity to greatly accelerate its use of biomass. The Importance. This revolution will have important impacts on our:* Economy-stimulating growth, especially in rural, farm and forest economies, and our industries.* Environment-by reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and airborne pollutants, reducing soil erosion, sequestering carbon, protecting water supplies and quality, and increasing the diversity of crops and products.* Energy security-by increasing domestic production and reducing our enormous dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuels.* Competitive position-opening up new technologies, industries, and export opportunities. The Consensus:* The National Academy of Sciences recognized the predominant impact that biological sciences will have on industry and technology in the 21st century.* The President proclaimed the importance of biobased products and bioenergy by establishing a national goal to triple their use in the United States by 2010.* The U.S. Congress acknowledged the exceptional potential of biobased products and bioenergy by enacting the Biomass Research and Development Act of 2000.* Industry, government laboratories, academia, and others recognized the importance of biobased products and bioenergy and are developing strategic planning documents including visions and technology roadmaps. The Challenges:* Science and technology-we need to advance science and develop technologies to overcome difficulties posed by the complexity of biomass resources and processes.* Policies-we need to coordinate government policies to meet the national goal.* Markets-we need to accelerate the commercialization of new and emerging technologies and products to meet the national goal.* Environment-we seek to ensure that new technologies and increased use of biomass will not adversely affect our land, water, air, and public health, but rather provide environmental benefits.* Education and Outreach-we need to provide American institutions, industry, farmers, landowners, and the public with information that will help them understand biobased products and bioenergy and make wise decisions in their application. An informed public is critical to the decision-making process.* Integration-we need to coordinate efforts across federal and state programs, educational organizations, businesses, and technologies to encourage the growth of an integrated industry. The Plan. This plan describes the federal strategy for meeting these challenges and attaining the national goal of tripling the use of biobased products and bioenergy by 2010. It is built on a strong foundation of science and technology, policy, and market goals, and strategies. The goals are summarized below and detailed in the pages that follow.

This book explores the promissory discourses and practices associated with the bioeconomy, focusing especially on the transformation of institutions; the creation, appropriation, and distribution of value; the struggle over resources, power, and meaning; and the role of altruism, kinship, and care practices. Governments and science enthusiasts worldwide are embracing the bioeconomy, championing it as the key to health, wealth, and sustainability, while citing it as justification to transform research and regulatory institutions, health and agricultural practices, ethics of privacy and ownership, and conceptions of self and kin. Drawing together studies from Asia, Australia, the Americas, and Europe, this volume encompasses subjects as diverse as regenerative medicine, population health research, agricultural finance, biobanking, assisted reproduction, immigration, breastfeeding, self-help groups, GM fish, and mining sewage.

This book focuses on the new concept of bioeconomy which collects the wisdom from life science, medicine and economics. lt finds the origins from ten existing theories, and also regards as “Pan's bioeconomy”. It has provided new methods for economic science research, opened up new fields for life science research, provided the right answer for China's economic miracle, filled the gap between materialism and idealism, and removed the fence between natural science and social science

Ethanol as an alternative fuel is receiving a lot of attention because it addresses concerns related to dwindling oil supplies, energy independence, and climate change. The majority of the ethanol in the US is produced from corn starch. With the US Department of Energy’s target that 30% of the fuel in the US is produced from renewable resources by 2030, the anticipated demand for corn starch will quickly exceed the current production of corn. This, plus the concern that less grain will become available for food and feed purposes, necessitates the use of other feedstocks for the production of ethanol. For the very same reasons, there is increasing research activity and growing interest in many other biomass crops. Genetic Improvement of Bio-Energy Crops focuses on the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass, which includes corn stover, biomass from dedicated annual and perennial energy crops, and trees as well as a number of important biomass crops. The biomass is typically pretreated through thermochemical processing to make it more amenable to hydrolysis with cellulolytic enzymes. The enzymatic hydrolysis yields monomeric sugars that can be fermented to ethanol by micro-organisms. While much emphasis has been placed on the optimization of thermo-chemical pretreatment processes, production of more efficient hydrolytic enzymes, and the development of robust microbial strains, relatively little effort has been dedicated to the improvement of the biomass itself.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book defines the new field of "Bioeconomy" as the sustainable and innovative use of biomass and biological knowledge to provide food, feed, industrial products, bioenergy and ecological services. The chapters highlight the importance of bioeconomy-related concepts in public, scientific, and political discourse. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the authors outline the dimensions of the bioeconomy as a means of achieving sustainability. The authors are ideally situated to elaborate on the diverse aspects of the bioeconomy. They have acquired in-depth experience of interdisciplinary research through the university’s focus on “Bioeconomy”, its contribution to the Bioeconomy Research Program of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, and its participation in the German Bioeconomy Council. With the number of bioeconomy-related projects at European universities rising, this book will provide graduate students and researchers with background information on the bioeconomy. It will familiarize scientific readers with bioeconomy-related terms and give scientific background for economists, agronomists and natural scientists alike.

Environmental Justice And Soy Agribusiness written by Robert Hafner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-17 with Business & Economics categories.

Environmental justice research and activism predominantly focus on openly conflictive situations; claims making is central. However, situations of injustice can still occur even if there is no overt conflict. Environmental Justice and Soy Agribusiness fills this gap by applying an environmental justice incommensurabilities framework to reveal the mechanisms of why conflicts do not arise in particular situations, even though they fall within classic environmental justice schemes. Empirically, the case study focus is on the remote soy frontier in Northwest Argentina, particularly the town of Las Lajitas as the nucleus of soy production. This represents an excellent example of the recent expansion of the soy agribusiness industry in Latin America. First, a classic environmental justice analysis is carried out. Second, and drawing on the epistemological works of Ludwik Fleck, an alternative analytical framework is proposed, visualising locals’ thought styles on change, effects and potential conflict in relation to soy agribusiness. Here, visceral elements and the application of a jazz methodology are vital for a more holistic form of multisensory cognition. Third, incommensurabilities among the classic and alternative approach are uncovered, arguing for the importance of temporal and spatial contexts in environmental justice research.
