Einleitung Der Kunst war im Staatssozialismus der DDR die Aufgabe zugedacht, den Herrschaftsanspruch durch ästhetische Präsentation der beabsichtigten gesellschaftlichen und zu erwartenden Wirklichkeit zu vergegenwärtigen. Die Mittel dazu waren der Austausch von Handlungsformen zwischen Künstler- und Arbeiterschaft, soziale Kollektivbildungen und die vehemente diskursive Vermittlung der vorgestellten Gesellschaftsordnung. Zwischen 1979 und 1989 – es ist das letzte Jahrzehnt der DDR – ist zunehmend eine Künstlergeneration am Werke, die abseits der offiziellen Kulturpolitik tätig ist und sich subkulturelle Räume schafft. Als Kunstform ist dabei die Fotografie von großer Bedeutung. Diese Hausarbeit will aufzeigen, wie sich die Fotografie als künstlerisches Medium in der DDR entwickelt hat und welche fotografiebezogenen Subkulturen es gab, die möglicherweise zum Niedergang und Zusammenbruch der DDR beigetragen haben. Anhand der geschichtlichen Entwicklung des Verbandes Bildender Künstler der DDR und der zentralen Kunstausstellungen soll die zunehmende Bedeutung der Fotografie als eigenständige Kunstform im Staatssozialismus beschrieben werden.

A 'school' of photography, although it was never described as such, evolved alongside the famous Leipzig School of painters who taught at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig in the 1980s. Taking 19th and 20th century social-democratic traditions and 1930s American photography as its starting point, a generation of photographers grew up under the influence of teaching artists like Arno Fischer, Evelyn Richter, Wolfgang G.
