This new volume explores the foundation of macromolecular science along with the field’s current challenges and solutions to challenges. The book discusses many new applications that have emerged recently based on different polymers and their composites, inlcuding some on the application of polymer composite in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, sensing, and wound healing. This book discusses innovations in the synthesis and characterization of many different classes of polymers and provides in-depth explanations of the behavior of polymers in solutions and in bulk. It considers the synthesis, characterization properties, and applications of many polymer composites and nanomaterials. The diverse topics cover zein-based composites, nanocellulose extracted as a potential filler for polymers, polymers to strengthen concrete, polymer/metal nanocomposite magnetic materials, synthetic polymers in aquatic environments, pharmaceutical 3D-printing, alginate-based wound healing dressings, and more. Many chapters in the volume place emphasis on sustainable development and green eco-friendly approaches. This volume will help researchers to understand the significance of macromolecular science and research advances for sustainable development for the benefit of humanity. It emphasizes the many roles of macromolecular science in the important fields of science, such as chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, pharmaceutical science, and more.

In 1974, as we approached the National Bicentennial and the Centenary of the American Chemical Society, Professor Otto Vogl, then Chairman of the Division of Polymer Chemistry, arranged a very special symposium dedicated to a review of the history of the Divi sion. It was an extraordinary occasion which included remarks by Professors Herman Mark, Charles Marvel, William Bailey, and Charles Overberger, all past Chairmen of the Division. The Executive Committee of the Division of Polymer Chemistry felt that 1976 deserved even more attention since it was to be also the 25th, the Silver Anniversary, of the Division of Polymer Chemis try. This year would be a most appropriate one not only to review milestones in our discipline, but also to look to the future. It was decided to undertake this volume and Dr. R. D. Ulrich agreed to serve as editor in assembling the collected papers. It is the hope of the officers of the Division that this volume will serve many purposes - a reference text, a record, and a source of perspective. F. E. The American Synthetic Rubber Research Program written by Peter J. T. Morris and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-30 with Science categories.

This history of the government-funded synthetic rubber research program (1942-1956) offers a rare analysis of a cooperative research program geared to the improvement of existing products and the creation of new ones. The founders of the program believed the best way to further research in the new field was through collaboration among corporations, universities, and the federal government. Morris concludes that, in fact, the effort was ultimately a failure and that vigorous competition proves the best way to stimulate innovation. Government programs, like the rubber research program, are far better at improving existing products, the author contends, than creating wholly new ones.

Inventing Polymer Science written by Yasu Furukawa and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-11 with Science categories.

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of polymer science to life in the twentieth century. Developments in polymer chemistry and engineering have led not only to the creation of a variety of substances such as synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, and plastic but also to discoveries about proteins, DNA, and other biological compounds that have revolutionized western medicine. For these reasons, the history of the discipline tells an important story about how both our material and intellectual worlds have come to be as they are. Yasu Furukawa explores that history by tracing the emergence of macromolecular chemistry, the true beginning of modern polymer science. It is a lively book, given human interest through its focus on the work of two of the central figures in the development of macromolecular chemistry, Hermann Staudinger and Wallace Carothers. In Inventing Polymer Science, Furukawa examines the origins and development of the scientific work of Staudinger and Carothers, illuminates their different styles in research and professional activities, and contrasts the peculiar institutional and social milieux in which they pursued their goals.
