The imagination is struck by the substantial conceptual identity between the problems met in the theoretical study of physical phenomena. It is absolutely unexpected and surprising, whether one studies equilibrium statistical me chanics, or quantum field theory, or solid state physics, or celestial mechanics, harmonic analysis, elasticity, general relativity or fluid mechanics and chaos in turbulence. So when in 1988 I was made chair of Fluid Mechanics at the Universita La Sapienza, not out of recognition of work I did on the subject (there was none) but, rather, to avoid my teaching mechanics, from which I could have a strong cultural influence on mathematical physics in Rome, I was not excessively worried, although I was clearly in the wrong place. The subject is wide, hence in the last decade I could do nothing else but go through books and libraries looking for something that was within the range of the methods and experiences of my past work. The first great surprise was to realize that the mathematical theory of fluids is in an even more primitive state than I was aware of. Nevertheless it still seems to me that a detailed analysis of the mathematical problems is essential for anyone who wishes to do research into fluids. Therefore, I dedicated (Chap. 3) all the space necessary to a complete exposition of the theories of Leray, of Scheffer and of Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg, taken directly from the original works.

Fluid mechanics and dynamics are foundational pillars in the study of engineering and physical sciences. The behavior of fluids—whether gases or liquids—affects everything from the flight of an airplane to the circulation of blood in the human body. Understanding how fluids move, interact, and respond to forces is essential for students and professionals in mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace, and biomedical engineering, among other fields. This book, Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics and Dynamics, is designed to provide a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the principles governing fluid behavior. It begins with basic concepts and gradually advances to more complex topics such as viscous flow, turbulence, compressibility, and boundary layers. Emphasis is placed on physical intuition, mathematical clarity, and practical application. The material has been organized to support both classroom learning and self-study. Worked examples, clear illustrations, and end-of-chapter problems help reinforce theoretical understanding. Whether you are encountering fluid mechanics for the first time or seeking a refresher, this text aims to build a solid foundation for further study and application. We sincerely hope this book serves as a valuable resource in your journey through the fascinating world of fluid dynamics.

Understanding the fundamentals of fluid mechanics is crucial for any analysis involving a system whereby a fluid serves as the working medium. Fluid mechanics is used to the design of practically all transportation modes. Knowledge of fluid mechanics is necessary for the design of subsonic and supersonic aircraft, ground effect machines, hovercraft, airplanes that take off and land vertically with a minimal surface ships, runway length, submarines, and vehicles. Even within fluid mechanics, there are subfields. Hydrodynamics is the field of study that focuses on the study of the movement of fluids that may be roughly considered incompressible. Hydraulics is a subfield of hydrodynamics that studies the movement of liquids across closed and open channels. The study of fluids whose density drastically varies during motion is known as gas dynamics; this includes the passage of gases via nozzles at high velocities. At either high or low speeds, aerodynamics examines how gases (particularly air) move over moving bodies like airplanes, rockets, and cars. Natural flows are the domain of many different subdisciplines, including meteorology, oceanography, and hydrology.

Foundations and Applications of Mechanics: Volume II, Fluid Mechanics shows how suitable approximations such as ideal fluid flow model, boundary layer methods, and the acoustic approximation, can help solve problems of practical importance. The author proceeds from the general to the particular, making it clear at each stage what assumptions have been made to obtain a particular approximation. In his discussion of compressible fluids, Jog steers away from using gas tables and emphasizes obtaining solutions by numerical techniques - an approach more amenable to computer solutions. He discusses the control volume and the differential equation forms of governing equations in detail and uses examples to demonstrate the advantages and shortcomings of each approach.

This book presents the fundamentals of low gravity fluid dynamics and heat transfer. It investigates fluid behavior in low gravity environments such as those found in earth orbiting and space vehicles. The two major fluid phenomena affected by gravity (buoyancy and surface tension) are treated thoroughly from both the theoretical and applications points of view, and limitations of fluid and thermal responses to gravitational fields in space-based settings are clearly delineated. Summaries of all data available from low gravity flight and terrestrial experiments performed to date are also presented.
