Taking a new perspective provided by a generalization of the mathematical formalism encompassing positive operator-valued measures, this book views old and new problems of the foundations of quantum mechanics. It demonstrates the crucial role of the generalized formalism in fundamental issues and practical applications.

The author argues that quantum theory admits a plurality of interpretations, each aiding further understanding of the theory, but also advocating specifically the Copenhagen Variant of the Modal Interpretation. That variant is applied to topics like the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox and the problem of 'identical' particles.

This book studies the foundations of quantum theory through its relationship to classical physics. This idea goes back to the Copenhagen Interpretation (in the original version due to Bohr and Heisenberg), which the author relates to the mathematical formalism of operator algebras originally created by von Neumann. The book therefore includes comprehensive appendices on functional analysis and C*-algebras, as well as a briefer one on logic, category theory, and topos theory. Matters of foundational as well as mathematical interest that are covered in detail include symmetry (and its "spontaneous" breaking), the measurement problem, the Kochen-Specker, Free Will, and Bell Theorems, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, quantization, indistinguishable particles, the quantum theory of large systems, and quantum logic, the latter in connection with the topos approach to quantum theory. This book provides an interdisciplinary approach to one of the most fascinating and important open questions in science: What is quantum mechanics really talking about? In the last decades quantum mechanics has given rise to a new quantum technological era, a revolution taking place today especially within the field of quantum information processing; which goes from quantum teleportation and cryptography to quantum computation. Quantum theory is probably our best confirmed physical theory. However, in spite of its great empirical effectiveness it stands today still without a universally accepted physical representation that allows us to understand its relation to the world and reality. The novelty of the book comes from the multiple perspectives put forward by top researchers in quantum mechanics, from Europe as well as North and South America, discussing the meaning and structure of the theory of quanta. The book comprises in a balanced manner physical, philosophical, logical and mathematical approaches to quantum mechanics and quantum information. Going from quantum superpositions and entanglement to dynamics and the problem of identity; from quantum logic, computation and quasi-set theory to the category approach and teleportation; from realism and empiricism to operationalism and instrumentalism; the book considers from different angles some of the most intriguing questions in the field. From Buenos Aires to Brussels and Cagliari, from Florence to Florianópolis, the interaction between different groups is reflected in the many different articles. This book is interesting not only to the specialists but also to the general public attempting to get a grasp on some of the most fundamental questions of present quantum physics.

Relativity In Rotating Frames written by G. Rizzi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Science categories.

Even if the subject is a long-standing one, this is the first monograph on this field. On the one hand, this book is intended to give a rather wide review on this field, both in a historical and pedagogical perspective; on the other hand, it aims at critically re-examining and discussing the most controversial issues. For instance, according to some authors the celebrated Sagnac effect is a disproval of the theory of relativity applied to rotating frames; according to others, it is an astonishing experimental evidence of the relativistic theory. In order to give the reader a deeper insight into this research field, the contributing authors discuss their opinions on the main subjects in an enthralling virtual round table: in this way, the reader can get a direct comparison of the various viewpoints on the most controversial and interesting topics. This is particularly expedient, since the differences in the various approaches are often based upon subtleties that can be understood only by a direct comparison of the underlying hypotheses.

Beyond The Quantum written by Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Science categories.

Already Einstein could never see quantum mechanics as a complete theory. Nowadays, many researchers, including 't Hooft, view quantum mechanics as a statistical description of some underlying reality. The workshop Beyond the Quantum, organized in Spring 2006 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, The Netherlands, was one of the first meetings completely devoted to physics that may need an explanation beyond quantum mechanics. A broad variety of subjects was covered. The present book reflects this.

Hierarchical Methods written by V. Kulish and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-10-31 with Science categories.

The book consists of two Volumes. The first (the preceding volume) is devoted to the general nonlinear theory of the hierarchical dynamic oscillative–wave systems. This theory has been called the theory of hi- archical oscillations and waves. Here two aspects of the proposed theory are discussed. The first aspects concern the fundamental nature and the basic c- cepts and ideas of a new hierarchical approach to studying hierarchical dynamic systems. A new hierarchical paradigm is proposed as a - sis of a new point of view of such types of systems. In turn, a set of hierarchical principles is formulated as the fundamental basis of this paradigm. Therein the self-resemblance (holographic) principle plays a key role here. An adequate mathematic description (factorization) of the proposed paradigm is carried out. The concepts of structural and dynamic (functional) operators are put into the basis of this descr- tion. Electrodynamics is chosen as a convenient basis for an obvious demonstration of some key points of the proposed new theory. The second aspect has a purely mathematical nature. It is related to the form of factorization (i.e., mathematical description) of hier- chical types of dynamic models, and discussion of the methods of their mathematical analysis. A set of the hierarchical asymptotic analytical– numerical methods is given as an evidence of the practical effectiveness of the proposed version of hierarchical theory.

This book introduces the factorization method in quantum mechanics at an advanced level, with the aim of putting mathematical and physical concepts and techniques like the factorization method, Lie algebras, matrix elements and quantum control at the reader’s disposal. For this purpose, the text provides a comprehensive description of the factorization method and its wide applications in quantum mechanics which complements the traditional coverage found in quantum mechanics textbooks.
