The Qur'an is the living source of all Islamic teaching, and is of singular importance to those interested in Islam and the study of religions. Despite this, there exists a long-felt lack of research tools for English first-language speakers who wish to access the Qur'an in the original Arabic. The "Dictionary of Qur'anic Usage" is the first comprehensive, fully-researched and contextualised Arabic-English dictionary of Qur'anic usage, compiled in accordance with modern lexicographical methods by scholars who have a lifelong immersion in Qur'anic Studies. Based on Classical Arabic dictionaries and Qur'an commentaries, this work also emphasises the role of context in determining the meaning-scatter of each vocabulary item. Illustrative examples from Qur'anic verses are provided in support of the definitions given for each context in which a particular word occurs, with cross-references to other usages. Frequently occurring grammatical particles are likewise thoroughly explained, insofar as they are used in conveying various nuances of meaning in the text.

The author acknowledges the great services rendered to Islam by Maulana Saiyid Abul 'Ala Maududi in molding the thinking of modern educated classes and restoring in them the confidence in Islamic values and thought as well as rescuing them from the sense of inferiority or defeatism. In his view, this was a sterling work performed by Maulana Maududi which must be acknowledged and for which the latter was rightly bestowed the title of 'Spokesman of Islam' by many a man of letters. The author, however, deprecates that Maulana Maududi, unfortunately, took up the task of modernizing Islamic thinking and started reorientation of Islamic metaphysics through interpretation of certain definitive terminological concepts of Islam in his famous work titled the 'Four Basic Quranic Terms'. In Maulana Maudidi's view these terms assumed, during the course of centuries, meanings different from those understood at the time of the descent of the Quran with the result that, barring a limited period, they came to be applied in a very narrow and ambiguous sense and obscured the real spirit of more than three fourth of the Quran. The author discusses in this book how the interpretation and emphasis on certain aspects of these terminological concepts by Maulana Maududi have led to a new type of exegesis of the Quran and Islam which has a political coloring and revolves around the 'Kingdom of God' and 'Sovereignty of God', and reduces the purpose of revelation of the Quran to the establishment of an 'Islamic State'. He fears that the new generation influenced by such ideas and 'researches' would not be prepared to accept any other disposition and a new religious temper would be developed which will have nothing to do with the spirit that was generated by the company and guidance of the holy Prophet. Devoid of any personal prejudice or objective to serve any personal end, this study of the interpretation of certain Quranic concepts by one for whom the author has greatest regard, has been undertaken with scholarly detachment for upholding what the author considers to be right and essential for the Ummah.

Reform And Modernity In Islam written by Safdar Ahmed and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-30 with Political Science categories.

The debate over Islam and modernity tends to be approached from a Eurocentric perspective that presents Western norms as a template for progress - against which Islamic societies can be measured. This misses the historical development of Muslim reformist thought that actively engages with the world around it and seeks to reconfigure Islam within the diverse conditions of modernity. Safdar Ahmed paints a complex and nuanced picture that goes beyond the idea that Muslim reformers have either reproduced or reacted against Western ideas. Rather, Ahmed argues, they have reconstructed and appropriated these ideas, and so the thread of Western influence runs through modern Islamic thought on nationalism and sovereignty, femininity and gender. Ahmed uncovers new historiographical perspectives by critically examining the work of prominent intellectuals, such as Muhammad Abduh, Qasim Amin and Abdul A'la Maududi.

This book is a study of political thought in Islam from the viewpoint of the history of ideas and the relevance of these ideas to contemporary Arabic political discourse. The author examines the use of the classical Islamic tradition (turath) and its religious and philosophical components by the three dominant Arabic political discourses: the Islamists, apologists and intellectuals. The book analyzes the different assumptions advanced by these discourses and the way they propose to apply or restore the turath in the present. Exploring connections between the medieval Islamic tradition and current debates, this book is essential reading for advanced students and researchers of Islam and political thought.

Dynamic Islam written by Jon Armajani and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Religion categories.

Dynamic Islam analyzes the lives and works of four of the most influential liberal diaspora Muslim intellectuals of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries--Fatima Mernissi, Leila Ahmed, Fazlur Rahman, and Mohammed Arkoun. These prolific scholars are among the first generation of Muslims writing in Western languages who have intentionally directed their works toward audiences in the West, as well as the Muslim world. Jon Armajani examines the way these cutting-edge scholars have interpreted the Quran, Hadith, and Islamic history as they have constructed their visions for Islam in the modern world. Armajani vividly describes their perspectives on women and gender, veiling, Islamic revivalism, Islam and democracy, and Islamic mysticism. The volume also situates their ideas with respect to conservatively minded western Muslims and Islamic revivalists.
