Excerpt from Uncle Sam's Panama Canal and World History, Accompanying the Panama Canal Flat-Globe: Its Achievement an Honor to the United States and a Blessing to the World We State With Satisfaction that the Panama Canal Flat-Globe and Geographical World History give in a concise, yet exhaustive form, an up-to-date presentation of world-wide geography that has no counterpart. They also comprise a new and advanced system of geographical review and reference that has never existed before, in a form that is easy to understand and convenient to use. Further, they give a full illustration and description of the Panama Canal, and the facts about the Suez Canal by the highest authority. This Globe and History mark a new departure in the consideration of the complete geography of the world. They cover fully the illustration, explanation and description of the earth upon which we live. Each of the two parts (Globe and History) is necessary to the intelligent and satisfactory use of the other. Together, they comprise a product needed to-day in every family circle and business place. Panama Canal Books, geographies, maps, atlases, charts and the geographical part of encyclopedias are fragmentary and disconnected presentations, whereas the Panama Canal Flat-Globe and Geographical World History cover the subject of world-wide geography from all points, connectedly and completely. The Panama Canal Flat-Globe illustrates the whole world. It indicates upon its surface, in their proper relationship, the oceans and seas, continents, countries and islands, the continental systems of great railroads, rivers, lakes and mountains. It also gives the latitude, longitude, time around the world, steamship and cable routes, prevailing winds, ocean currents, ice-drifts, etc., and clearly shows the latest routings of the ocean highways with proper distances through the Panama and Suez Canals. The Geographical World History explains the subject of world-wide geography under the heads of Physical Geography and the phenomena and forces of nature; Mathematical Geography, with its interesting data in relation to time, climate and seasons; and national or political geography, dividing the continents into their numerous sections of governmental control; with frequent reference to the Flat-Globe to give the proper and clear understanding of these subjects. The History of the Ages, and of the 2,000,000,000, people who inhabit the earth together with their activities, is shown in the national and political sub-divisions of the world, the development of its resources, ocean and land transportation facilities and means of intercommunication, and the industrial, commercial and agricultural activities of the various races. All these subjects are clearly presented in this production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Panama and the Canal Four hundred years ago men accepted the challenge. First Spain, then Scotland, England, and France poured out money and life in a vain effort to build a waterway and to defeat the powers of Nature. Last of all, the United States, led by a dauntless President, took up the fight. This is the greatest engineering work the world has yet seen, said President Roosevelt, but the Canal shall be built! These names tell 1n short the story of the Isthmus. In all the Western Hemisphere no spot has had so romantic a history as this small strip of land that joins the two continents but separates the two greatest oceans of the world. Excerpt from The Story of the Panama Canal No material work of man since the creation of the world has had so deep and widespread an influence upon the affairs of mankind in general as that which may calculably be expected to ensue from the achievement of the Panama Canal. The results will be seen in commercial, political, social, and even religious, effects. It will make and mar the fortunes of nations. Cousin, the French philosopher, has said: "Tell me the geography of a country and I will tell you its destiny." By creating important modifications in the geographical relations of certain communities the Canal will be the means of bringing about great and lasting changes which are beyond the range of accurate forethought. We can, however, predict an enormous gain to this country from the stupendous enterprise which has been brought to a brilliant and successful conclusion. No task has ever been undertaken before which can compare with it either in magnitude or difficulty, and the great waterway will stand forever a monument to the dauntless courage, infinite resourcefulness, ingenuity and administrative ability of the American people. The Panama Canal written by J. Saxon Mills and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-10 with Fiction categories.

This book discusses in depth the importance and history behind the Panama Canal. To the uninitiated, the Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. Colombia, France, and later the United States controlled the territory surrounding the canal during construction. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped because of lack of investors' confidence due to engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project on May 4, 1904, and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority.
