When Great Britain won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympics coxless four, seven million people watched and voted it the greatest sporting moment of the year. This moment, and Steve Redgrave's fifth Olympic gold medal, has eclipsed the long and troubled journey four men made to peak at exactly the right time. Tim Foster brings vividly to life what it's like to be one of four headstrong, and at times conflicting, personalities and reveals how close they all came to implosion as the Sydney Olympics approached. FOUR MEN IN A BOAT is structured around the 2000m final itself, with Tim Foster analysing the story of the crew as they progress towards the gold medal. He also gives a compelling insight into the hardships of sport at the highest level, and what it takes for four men to come together and win Olympic gold.

"When does a man quit the sea?" asked E.B. White. "Does he quit while he's ahead, or wait till he makes some major mistake?" Skipper and the crew seem to thrive pushing for the latter. Sailing alongside killer whales. Flying the Canadian flag upside down while coasting blithely into Victoria. Debating who gets left behind the day they have to squeeze into the three-man lifeboat. Interrogated by the US Coast Guard. Running aground. Losing themselves in blinding sea fog. Standing rapt beneath Taps' benediction as the American flag retires in Roche Harbor. For Kjell, John, Ed, and Skipper, sailing is about far more than simply passing time on the water. It's about the love of familiar faces and the thirst for new horizons-on land or sea. It's about the bond created by the sheer accumulation of memories, just a few of which are in this book. What else could explain why four grandpas (all north of sixty) spend four days navigating the San Juan islands every summer for fifteen years, when only one of them grew up sailing and he (given the opportunity) might cheerfully capsize the boat?

Jerome Klapka Jerome was an English writer and humourist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat. Other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; Three Men on the Bummel, a sequel to Three Men in a Boat, and several other novels.Jerome sat right down to write Three Men during a Boat as soon because the couple returned from their honeymoon. within the novel, his wife was replaced by his longtime friends George Wingrave (George) and Carl Hentschel (Harris). This allowed him to make comic (and non-sentimental) situations which were nonetheless intertwined with the history of the Thames region. The book, published in 1889, became a moment success and has never been out of print. Its popularity was such the amount of registered Thames boats went up one-half within the year following its publication, and it contributed significantly to the Thames becoming a tourist attraction. In its first twenty years alone, the book sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. it's been adapted to films, TV and radio shows, stage plays, and a musical. Its literary genre influenced many humourists and satirists in England et al. .With the financial security that the sales of the book provided, Jerome was ready to dedicate all of his time to writing. He wrote variety of plays, essays, and novels, but was never ready to recapture the success of Three Men during a Boat. In 1892, he was chosen by Robert Barr to edit The Idler (over Rudyard Kipling). The magazine was an illustrated satirical monthly catering to gentlemen (who, following the theme of the publication, appreciated idleness). In 1893, he founded To-Day, but had to withdraw from both publications due to financial difficulties and a libel suit.Jerome's play Biarritz had a run of two months at the Prince of Wales Theatre between April and June 1896.In 1898, a brief stay in Germany inspired Three Men on the Bummel, the sequel to 3 Men during a Boat, reintroducing an equivalent characters within the setting of a far off bicycle tour. The book was nonetheless unable to capture the life-force and historic roots of its predecessor, and it enjoyed only a light success. In 1902, he published the novel Paul Kelver, which is widely considered autobiographical. His 1908 play The Passing of the Third Floor Back introduced a more sombre and non secular Jerome. the most character was played by one among the leading actors of the time, Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and therefore the play was an incredible commercial success. it had been twice made into film, in 1918 and in 1935. However, the play was condemned by critics - Beerbohm described it as "vilely stupid" and as written by a "tenth-rate writer"

THREE MEN IN A BOAT Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat (To say nothing of the dog), published in 1889, is the hilarious account of three men, a dog and their boating holiday on the Thames. Originally intended to be a serious travel guide, the book is now known for its compelling humour and gentle mockery of English society in the 1880s. THREE MEN IN A BOAT The novel "Three Men in a Boat", written by Jerome K. Jerome and published in 1889, is a humorous story about a boat trip in the Thames River that J. takes with his friends George and William Samuel Harris. The author’s prose is long-winding and digresses into anecdotes or observational passages quite often. THREE MEN IN A BOAT The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about "Three Men in a Boat" is how undated it appears to modern readers, the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. THREE MEN IN A BOAT The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life friends. THREE MEN IN A BOAT Three Men in a Boat is the irreverent tale of a group of friends who, along with a fox terrier named Montmorency, embark on a two-week boating journey up the Thames. Passing by famous landmarks on their way from Kingston to Oxford, the three gloriously underprepared travelers—George, William, and J.—confront the humor in everything from assembling a tent to fending off hostile swans. Originally conceived as a travel guide, the narrative instead evolved into a sharply witty tale replete with historical anecdotes, raucous digressions, and unforgettable misadventures. THREE MEN IN A BOAT As funny and relatable today as it was more than a century ago, Three Men in a Boat was recently ranked by the Guardian as one of the twenty-five best novels of all time and by Esquire UK as one of the top twenty funniest books ever written. THREE MEN IN A BOAT Three Men in a Boat was meant to be a serious travel guide to the Thames, between Kingston and Oxford. Instead, it is one of the wittiest, funniest fictional jaunts down a river ever written. The three men are based on author Jerome and two of his friends. The dog "developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog." THREE MEN IN A BOAT

Now a Major Motion Picture Directed by George Clooney The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about the American Olympic rowing triumph in Nazi Germany—from the author of Facing the Mountain. For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.
