Harry Gilmor started out in Baltimore but at the outbreak of the American Civil War, immediately lent his sympathies to the Confederate cause. Twice captured and held prisoners by Union forces, he nevertheless along the way fought in many battles, including at Gettysburg and actions against General Phil Sheridan's forces in the Shenandoah Valley. As a major, he commanded the First Maryland Cavalry and Second Maryland Cavalry, supporting Brig. Gen. George Steuart's infantry brigade. Remarkably, after the war, he became president of a veterans group that included old soldiers from the Union and the Confederate armies. He also became the Baltimore City Police Commissioner from 1874 to 1879. He succumbed to complications of a war wound when he was only 45 years old. This is one of the best regimental histories from the American Civil War. And no wonder...it was compiled by a historian who was a member of the regiment. The First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry was one of the most storied regiments of the war. They fought at many of the most important battles of the war, including Corinth, Perrysville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign, and Kilpatrick's raid. As they relate below, the regiment's members were under fire well over one hundred times during four years of service.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

One of the charms of Charles Field's account of his time as a Union soldier in the American Civil War is its utter simplicity. He was a typical soldier, a non-commissioned officer, of limited education. His phrasing and misspellings, for some reason printed in the original manuscript, lend an authenticity to his stories. Field saw plenty of action, had hair-raising close calls, and lived to tell about it in this 1908 publication. After the war, he married, raised a family, and farmed in Illinois and Iowa. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Partisan Life With Mosby S Rangers Abridged Annotated written by Major John Scott and has been published by BIG BYTE BOOKS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with History categories.

John Singleton Mosby's Rangers bedeviled the Union army for four long years. The Rangers were what we would today call guerillas; units that could make fast raids and get away before the enemy could react. This highly-successful unit became legendary during the war and continues to be an object of fascination by scholars and enthusiasts of the period into the 21st century. This is the official memoir of Mosby's command, written with his cooperation after the war. The author of this work, John Scott, wrote the Partisan Ranger Law in 1862. John Singleton Mosby was a remarkable individual. Highly intelligent, educated, and modest, he held the respect of many on both sides of the war. After the Civil War, he became a Republican and a supporter of Ulysses S. Grant. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. This is a rare book of keen observation, respect, and in some instances even affection for Native Americans of his time. (It's a good bet his editor or the marketing department had something to do with the language.) General Oliver O. Howard commanded Union forces in the American Civil War and lost his right arm at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862. After recovery, he continued in important commands, including the Army of the Tennessee. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. For nine years after the Civil War, he was commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau and worked to integrate free African Americans into southern society. Howard was also a leader in promoting higher education for freedmen, most notably in founding of Howard University in Washington and serving as its president 1867–73. He accepted the surrender of the famous chief Joseph, and led campaigns and negotiations with an astonishing number of the western tribes. No student of the Indian Wars in the United States should miss reading this book. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
