John Singleton Mosby's Rangers bedeviled the Union army for four long years. The Rangers were what we would today call guerillas; units that could make fast raids and get away before the enemy could react. This highly-successful unit became legendary during the war and continues to be an object of fascination by scholars and enthusiasts of the period into the 21st century. This is the official memoir of Mosby's command, written with his cooperation after the war. The author of this work, John Scott, wrote the Partisan Ranger Law in 1862. John Singleton Mosby was a remarkable individual. Highly intelligent, educated, and modest, he held the respect of many on both sides of the war. After the Civil War, he became a Republican and a supporter of Ulysses S. Grant. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. This is the unabridged edition. John Scott, the author of this book, wrote the Partisan Ranger Law on March 27, 1862, and it was approved by the Confederate Congress on April 21, 1862. The rangers operated on the whole autonomously, but they did liaise with regular Confederate forces when they were nearby. The intention of the creation of the Partisan Rangers was to provide protection from invading Union armies. However, due to the lack of formal military organization and discipline, things sometimes got out of hand. A noteworthy exception was the command of Col. John Singleton Mosby in Northern Virginia, which were considered a different category from the more undisciplined groups. Leading the crme-de-la-crme of the partisan groups, the "ubiquitous Mosby," as one journalist called him, appeared to be everywhere and his operations were remarkable. This book is an entertaining record of the spectacular adventures of Mosby's Partisan Rangers.

Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. ACCOUNT OF PRIVATE M'CUE'S IMPRISONMENT. [TnK following facts in regard to the treatment of M'Cue have, at my request, been furnished me by a gentleman well acquainted with them. They present a picture of despotism and cruelty rarely witnessed in a Christian country, but they bear, at the same time, honorable testimony to the fidelity with which General Grant adhered to the engagements which he contracted at Appomattox Court-house.-- Editor.] From Annapolis he was removed to Baltimore and cast into a negro jail, where his treatment was that of a convict. He was heavily ironed, and confined in a dark, cold cell, and when a fellowprisoner, through the iron-bars of his dungeon, gave him a blanket, the order was given to the prison-guard to take it away. Very soon a man dressed in Confederate uniform was put in the cell with M'Cue, and left to spend the night with him. The stranger made advances toward an acquaintance, asked his fellow-prisoner his name, to what command he belonged, and the charges preferred against him, and at the same time told him that he himself was under charges as a Confederate, and was to be tried by a military commission. He doubted not, he added, that both of them would be sentenced to the gallows. "I have a proposition to make to you, for there is but one way in which we can save our lives--to rush upon the guard, seize their arms, and murder them. In the confusion thus created, an opportunity may occur for our escape." The proposition was so wild and impossible of execution that M'Cue at once saw in it a snare prepared for his destruction. So he very quietly said to his companion," You may attempt to murder the guard and make your escape, but I will have nothing to do with it." He knew he was a...

An.); Including the Exploits of Smith, Chapman, Richards, Montjoy, Turner, Russell, Glasscock, and the Men Under Them The dream of Southern independence and a separate nationality has vanished forever. The cause which the men of the South had nearest their hearts, and for which they sacri ficed so many lives, so much wealth, and their whole energies both of mind and body, has failed, their sacrifices have all been in vain, their resources have been exhausted in the fruitless endeavor to achieve their independence, and thousands of their bravest and noblest sons have fallen in the unequal contest. At the end of four years of almost superhuman exertions, they find themselves a conquered people, with the loss of every thing but their honor, seeking restoration to their former position under the Federal flag. Colonel John Singleton Mosby led the most successful partisan campaign during the American Civil War. Major General J. E. B. Stuart, the Confederate Cavalry commander, allowed Mosby to form an unconventional unit with nine volunteers in December 1862. Mosby then organized, trained, and equipped the 43d Battalion of Virginia Cavalry, better known as Mosby's Rangers. This unit grew to almost one thousand men in strength and conducted many daring raids on the Union forces and lines of communication. Mosby, nicknamed the Gray Ghost, tied down Union troops in Virginia and Maryland and relieved pressure on General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia. The Rangers also provided timely and accurate intelligence to Confederate corps-level units. This study examines Mosby's campaign from the unit's formation in 1863 until the termination of the war in 1865. All aspects of this unconventional campaign are described with emphasis on Mosby's tactics, techniques, and procedures. This study provides an excellent example of the successful employment of partisan warfare and the attempts to combat it. It concludes with the lessons learned and their contribution to current Army doctrine.
