Order Legitimacy And Wealth In Ancient States written by Janet Richards and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-12-07 with Business & Economics categories.

Three terms, Order, Legitimacy and Wealth, delineate a comparative approach to ancient civilizations initially developed by John Baines, Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford, and Norman Yoffee, Professor of Archaeology and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan, in 1992. In an influential paper, they compared and contrasted the nature of social and political power in Egypt and Mesopotamia. This was the first analysis of the impact of wealth and high culture on the development of states. The contributors to the present book, first published in 2000, apply the classic Baines/Yoffee model to a range of ancient states around the world, providing documentary and archaeological evidence on the production and uses of 'high culture', literature and monumental architecture. There are chapters on Mesoamerica, the Andes, the Indus Valley, the Han Dynasty of China, and Greece during the Roman empire, while others expand on the original Egypt-Mesopotamia comparison.

Calendars And Years written by John M. Steele and has been published by Oxbow Books Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

Dates form the backbone of written history. But where do these dates come from? Many different calendars were used in the ancient world. Some of these calendars were based upon observations or calculations of regular astronomical phenomena, such as the first sighting of the new moon crescent that defined the beginning of the month in many calendars, while others incorporated schematic simplifications of these phenomena, such as the 360-day year used in early Mesopotamian administrative practices in order to simplify accounting procedures. Historians frequently use handbooks and tables for converting dates in ancient calendars into the familiar BC/AD calendar that we use today. But very few historians understand how these tables have come about, or what assumptions have been made in their construction. The seven papers in this volume provide an answer to the question what do we know about the operation of calendars in the ancient world, and just as importantly how do we know it? Topics covered include the ancient and modern history of the Egyptian 365-day calendar, astronomical and administrative calendars in ancient Mesopotamia, and the development of astronomical calendars in ancient Greece. This book will be of interest to ancient historians, historians of science, astronomers who use early astronomical records, and anyone with an interest in calendars and their development.

48th Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale written by W. H. van Soldt and has been published by Peeters this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

The theme of the 48e Recontre Assyriologique Internationale held in Leiden on July 1-4, 2002 was "Ethnicity in Ancient Mesopotamia." The volume as it is published contains 36 papers which have ethnicity as their subject. Although the book is basically a collection of individual articles, almost all aspects of ethnicity have been discussed, and thus the final result amounts to more than just the sum of its parts. An important part of the volume is taken up by a session that was held on Tuesday and that dealt with the so-called Sumerian question. The session was organized by Gordon Whittaker, and 9 specialists responded to his call for papers. The result is a new evaluation from many angles of the earliest history of cuneiform script and the people and language behind it.

"Brill's New Pauly is the English edition of the authoritative Der Neue Pauly, published by Verlag J. B. Metzler since 1996. The encyclopaedic coverage and high academic standard of the work, the interdisciplinary and contemporary approach and clear and accessible presentation have made the New Pauly the unrivalled modern reference work for the ancient world. Fifteen volumes ("Antiquity, 1-15") of Brill's New Pauly are devoted to Greco-Roman antiquity and cover more than two thousand years of history, ranging from the second millennium BC to early medieval Europe. Special emphasis is given to the interaction between Greco-Roman culture on the one hand, and Semitic, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavonic culture, and ancient Judaism, Christianity, and Islam on the other hand. Five volumes ("Classical Tradition, I-V") are uniquely concerned with the long and influential aftermath of antiquity and the process of continuous reinterpretation and revaluation of the ancient heritage, including the history of classical scholarship. Brill's New Pauly presents the current state of traditional and new areas of research and brings together specialist knowledge from leading scholars from all over the world. Many entries are elucidated with maps and illustrations and the English edition will include updated bibliographic references." --Book Jacket.
