Ernst Bloch and His Contemporaries is a much needed concise yet comprehensive overview of Ernst Bloch's early and later thought. It fills an important gap in research on the history of German thought in the 20th century by reconstructing the contexts of Bloch's philosophy, while focusing on his contemporaries - Georg Lukács, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor Adorno. Ernst Bloch's influential ideas include his theory of utopian consciousness, his resolute inclination to merge aesthetics and politics, rehabilitation of hope, and atheistic conception of Christianity. Although Bloch's major early texts, Spirit of Utopia and Traces, have recently been translated into English, and there has been renewed interest in Bloch over the last 15 years, he is still relatively unknown compared to other left German-Jewish intellectuals. Ivan Boldyrev places Bloch's often enigmatic prose within contexts more familiar to English-speaking readers, and outlines the most important messages in Bloch's legacy still relevant today to European intellectual discourse, in particular aesthetics and philosophy of history.

This volume offers a critical re-assessment of the thought of Ernst Bloch, best known for his groundbreaking study The Principle of Hope and one of the most significant European thinkers and public intellectuals of the twentieth century. It explores Bloch’s life, work and reception; his debt to Marx and Hegel; his central concepts of hope and utopia; his affinities with philosophers such as Gramsci and Žižek; and his radical reframing of our understanding of history, society and culture. Above all, this volume examines the relevance of Bloch’s ideas today, in a world still shot through with economic inequality and social injustice. Contributors are: Agata Bielik-Robson, Ivan Boldyrev, Henk de Berg, Sam Dolbear, Vincent Geoghegan, Holger Glinka, Loren Goldman, Douglas Kellner, Cat Moir, Jan Rehmann, Nina Rismal, Johan Siebers and Peter Thompson

Nathaniel Barron offers the first book length account in English of Ernst Bloch’s contribution to a Marxist philosophy of language. It is ambitious both in situating Bloch’s ideas in the broader Marxist engagement with language as it currently exists, and in using Bloch’s utopian categories to challenge that engagement. In particular, Barron reads Voloshinov’s insights into language through Bloch’s categories, and argues that Bloch advances on Voloshinov by offering an understanding of the social materiality of language which is more useful for challenging fascist forms of utterance.

This book provides a comprehensive description of how evangelicals in Northern Ireland interpreted the "Troubles" (1966-2007) in the light of how they read the Bible. The rich and diverse landscape of Northern Irish evangelicalism during the "Troubles" is ideally suited to this study of both the light and dark sides of apocalyptic eschatology. Searle demonstrates how the notion of apocalypse shaped evangelical and fundamentalist interpretations of the turbulent events that characterized this dark yet fascinating period in the history of Northern Ireland. The book uses this case study to offer a timely reflection on some of the most pressing issues in contemporary negotiations between culture and religion. Given the current resurgence of religious fundamentalism in the wake of 9/11, together with popular conceptions of a "clash of civilizations" and the so-called War on Terror, this book is not only an engaging academic study; it also resonates with some of the defining cultural issues of our time.

Photography Ecology And Historical Change In The Anthropocene written by Bergit Arends and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-09 with Photography categories.

Moving beyond existing scholarship, this book connects photography, archives, ecology and historical change and critically applies the Anthropocene as framework to the in-depth study of artists’ projects. It discards single modes of seeing environmental transformations in favour of a multiple and de-centred environmental imagination. Bergit Arends uses multidisciplinary perspectives to view localized environmental, social and political issues through research-based artistic practices. The book not only makes available original research into newly and recently discovered archives of ecological and historical change but also shows how this research is manifest in exhibition formats. This book presents international, transhistorical projects by contemporary visual artists who use archives together with photography as documentary and performative media for the comparative study of environments and places. A wide array of artists from diverse backgrounds working primarily in Europe and North America from the 1970s to the present day are discussed and set in relation to Anthropocene narratives. Case studies include environmental archive-based work by Nguyen the Thuc, Christiane Eisler, Chrystel Lebas, Mark Dion, Joy Gregory and Philip Miller. The book will be of interest to scholars working in photography, archive studies, art history, visual culture, environmental humanities and ecocriticism.

The Utopian Aesthetics Of Three African American Women Toni Morrison Gloria Naylor Julie Dash written by Heike Raphael-Hernandez and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.

This work offers a connection between the concrete utopian theory of hope by the Gennan Jewish philosopher Ernst Bloch and the literary productions of contemporary African American women writers. The study argues that these literary texts should be read as concrete utopias outlined in Bloch's major work The Principle ofHope. Bloch argues that when people become consciously aware of the dialectical tendencies in concrete utopias will they recognize the possibilities first for their own personal empowerment and then for their communities. As a result of their conscious awareness, readers will be able to perceive the visions of the texts and will begin to actively dream of becoming agents for change themselves. The study claims that most texts by contemporary African American women writers such as Alice Walker, Toni Cade Bambara, Gloria Naylor, Ntozake Shange, Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones, Paule Marshall, Sherley Anne Williams, Bebe Moore Campbell, and Terry McMillan provide concrete utopian visions. An application of Bloch's theory to these writers enriches a reading of their texts and demonstrates that art is the medium that will remind people of their constant, never-ending responsibility for personal agency.
