Excerpt from Fragments in Philosophy and Science: Being Collected Essays and Addresses The volume is made up of papers selected from a larger number scattered during fifteen years in various journals. It is thought worth while to gather them together because -and the selections are made with view to this - they are related to larger topics on which I have published more extensively - or intend to -in separate works. The group of philosophical essays are introductory to a developed view of the world. The critical and historical papers naturally stand more squarely on their own feet; yet they too walk in a direction, and cany their own signboards. The strictly experimental studies, on the other hand, give results which in so far justify their own presence here either as contributing something to their respective topics, or as announcing ideas which have proved in some small way fruitful in the later literature. Speaking of signboards, it may be well to erect one or two of them in this place, in advance, though I know the risks of labelling things, and tremble before that risk. Yet one may be allowed to encourage his reader to start in - or to discourage him from starting in! - by telling him what the general direction is. At any rate so much is in my mind to say, not only for readers of these papers, but for those who may know the more connected discussions of my other books. In Love With Eternity written by Richard Schain and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02 with Philosophy categories.

In Love With Eternity presents a project of philosophic thought. It is composed of a group of essays and fragments concerned with the creation of one's self, which self is the substance of reality for every human being. The nature of philosophy, however, has become blurred by the advancement of the sciences in the past two centuries, leading to a situation where philosophers consider themselves to be scientists--many would like to wear white coats if they could. Nevertheless, philosophy is not science but is metaphysics and is the consequence of the long recognized "metaphysical need" of homo sapiens. A central concept in these essays is that of the relationship of 'eternity' to time; one can regard with dismay the passage of time but love one's position in eternity. The concept of the "pointillist canvas of eternity" is presented as a new philosophical world view. Knowledge of the history of thought is essential for philosophical development and in this project, ideas of Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Berdyaev are given special emphasis. The essay entitled "Philosophy: Rigorous Science or Intuitive Thought" asserts the primacy of the mysteriously rational, mysteriously intuitive human mind over the object world of science.

In Philosophical Fragments the pseudonymous author Johannes Climacus explored the question: What is required in order to go beyond Socratic recollection of eternal ideas already possessed by the learner? Written as an afterword to this work, Concluding Unscientific Postscript is on one level a philosophical jest, yet on another it is Climacus's characterization of the subjective thinker's relation to the truth of Christianity. At once ironic, humorous, and polemical, this work takes on the "unscientific" form of a mimical-pathetical-dialectical compilation of ideas. Whereas the movement in the earlier pseudonymous writings is away from the aesthetic, the movement in Postscript is away from speculative thought. Kierkegaard intended Postscript to be his concluding work as an author. The subsequent "second authorship" after The Corsair Affair made Postscript the turning point in the entire authorship. Part One of the text volume examines the truth of Christianity as an objective issue, Part Two the subjective issue of what is involved for the individual in becoming a Christian, and the volume ends with an addendum in which Kierkegaard acknowledges and explains his relation to the pseudonymous authors and their writings. The second volume contains the scholarly apparatus, including a key to references and selected entries from Kierkegaard's journals and papers.

One of the most important Presocratic philosophers was the Sicilian Empedocles. He presented his work in the form of two hexameter poems, of which about 450 lines are extant, revealing a formidable range of interests, acute observation, and a firm grasp of fundamental issues in the study of man and nature. Empedocles' theory of four elements was crucial to later developments in science and medicine. He showed how forces of attraction and repulsion acted on the elements within a framework of cyclical time and limited space, and initiated or advanced major discoveries in astronomy, biology, and physiology. More sophisticated concepts of divinity, personality, and mortality replaced traditional mythology, and these concepts were founded on the conviction that the individual has control over his own character and intellectual growth. The introduction discusses Empedocles' life and interests, the content of the Physics and Katharmoi, and the relation of the two poems to each other. A new Greek text with apparatus is followed by translation, commentary, and detailed concordance, to give a comprehensive edition of this key figure in the history of ideas. "With its careful and judicious editing of the fragments and its many fresh insights into Empedocles' thought, this work will be indispensable to students of Presocratic philosophy."--Alexander P.D. Mourelatos
