As a high-ranking American diplomat during the Cold War, Martin J. Hillenbrand was witness to some of the most exciting moments in twentieth-century history. Fragments of Our Time is a richly detailed, gracefully written account of a career that spanned seven presidencies and more than half a century. After stints in Africa and Asia, the bulk of Hillenbrand's career was spent in Europe. He recounts with authority his experiences in postwar Germany, his involvement with the Cuban missile crisis, his appointment as the first American ambassador to Hungary, and his posts as assistant secretary of state for European affairs and ambassador to Germany. Hillenbrand writes with a keen wit and discerning eye of the people and events that shaped contemporary American foreign policy.

Fragments written by David Tracy and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-06 with Religion categories.

David Tracy is widely considered one of the most important religious thinkers in North America, known for his pluralistic vision and disciplinary breadth. His first book in more than twenty years reflects Tracy’s range and erudition, collecting essays from the 1980s to 2018 into a two-volume work that will be greeted with joy by his admirers and praise from new readers. In the first volume, Fragments, Tracy gathers his most important essays on broad theological questions, beginning with the problem of suffering across Greek tragedy, Christianity, and Buddhism. The volume goes on to address the Infinite, and the many attempts to categorize and name it by Plato, Aristotle, Rilke, Heidegger, and others. In the remaining essays, he reflects on questions of the invisible, contemplation, hermeneutics, and public theology. Throughout, Tracy evokes the potential of fragments (understood both as concepts and events) to shatter closed systems and open us to difference and Infinity. Covering science, literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and non-Western religious traditions, Tracy provides in Fragments a guide for any open reader to rethink our fragmenting contemporary culture.

What does a feminist urban theory look like for the twenty first century? This book puts knowledges of feminist urban scholars, feminist scholars of social reproduction, and other urban theorists into conversation to propose an approach to the urban that recognises social reproduction both as foundational to urban transformations and as a methodological entry-point for urban studies. Offers an approach feminist urban theory that remains intentionally cautious of universal uses of social reproduction theory, instead focusing analytical attention on historical contingency and social difference Eleven chapters that collectively address distinct elements of the contemporary crisis in social reproduction and the urban through the lenses of infrastructure and subjectivity formation as well as through feminist efforts to decolonize urban knowledge production Deepens understandings of how people shape and reshape the spatial forms of their everyday lives, furthering understandings of the 'infinite variety' of the urban Essential reading for academics, researchers and scholars within urban studies, human geography, gender and sexuality studies, and sociology

"Many scholars consider In Our Time to be Hemingway's finest work, yet the cohesiveness of this sequence of stories and interchapters has often been questioned. Hemingway himself, however, had a clear idea of the work's integrity, as his manuscripts and letters reveal. As he wrote to his publisher Horace Liveright on 31 March 1925, "There is nothing in the book that has not a definite place in its organization and if I at any time seem to repeat myself I have a good reason for doing so" (Selected Letters, 154)." "According to Ms. Tetlow, author of this thoughtful study of Hemingway's In Our Time, the relationship among the stories and interchapters is precisely analogous to that within a modern poetic sequence as characterized by M.L. Rosenthal and Sally M. Gall in The Modern Poetic Sequence: The Genius of Modern Poetry: ". . . a grouping of mainly lyric poems and passages, rarely uniform in pattern, which tend to interact as an organic whole. It usually includes narrative and dramatic elements, and ratiocinative ones as well, but its structure is finally lyrical" (9). The structure of In Our time, then, is similar to such works as Ezra Pound's Hugh Selwyn Mauberley and T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, works that progress tonally." "Looking closely at the language of In Our Time, Ms. Tetlow pays particular attention to recurring images and sounds, and the successive sets of feeling these tonal complexes project. She traces the lyrical pattern in the sequence as it builds in intensity from denial of fear, suffering, and death in the first stories and early interchapters, and then traces the progression to cautious resignation in the latter stories and interchapters. The author also takes into account the importance for Hemingway of Pound's and Eliot's aesthetics and demonstrates how Eliot's idea of the objective correlative and Pound's idea of "direct treatment of the 'thing'" apply to Hemingway's stories and interchapters (Literary Essays, 3)." "Opening with a discussion of the six prose pieces in the original version--the shorter "In Our Time" (1923)--the study considers the aesthetic choices Hemingway made in revising these pieces when he incorporated them in his longer sequence of eighteen in in our time (1924). The study then discusses the lyrical progression of the prose sequence in the fully developed volume In Our Time (1925). Finally, it looks at A Farewell to Arms and shows how the lyrical structure of In Our Time anticipates the longer work with its more continuous narrative pattern."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Fragments For Fractured Times written by Nicola Slee and has been published by SCM Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-30 with Religion categories.

If ever a period of time felt ‘fractured’ it is now. Whichever way we turn, we witness the dismembering and fracturing of many previously taken for granted realities, with maps and borders – physical and metaphorical – being redrawn before our eyes. What place for the feminist practical theologian in such a climate? “In Fragments for Fractured Times”, one of the world’s leading feminist practical theologians, Nicola Slee, brings together 15 years of papers, articles, talks and sermons, many of them previously unpublished. Collected from diverse times, places, settings and occasions, Slee offers an introduction to each fragment, “holding it up to the light and examining its size, shape, texture and pattern”. Drawing on a wide and diverse range of her writing, Slee demonstrates the richness and variety of feminist practical theological writing. What feminist theology brings to the table of scholarly thinking and embodied practice is, she suggests, something creative, artful, prophetic as well as playful – a resource for Christian living and thinking in fractured times.
