framework Framework for the World. The geographical framework for the world is so fundamental it affects the lives of everyone on earth. On top of this 'template' virtually all other kinds of information are collected and displayed, ranging from population and socio-economic statistics, through environmental data of all kinds to asset registers such as the location of underground pipes and cables. For many years, the framework comprised simple topographic paper maps. Increasingly it is formed by topographic digital databases, from which maps and other products can be 'spun off'. These maps and databases have been created by a branch of national government, the National Mapping Organizations. At present, however, there are large variations in the content, quality and currency of the mapping and many countries have not yet converted all their maps into digital format. The world of NMOs is in turmoil, beset by rapid changes in technology, higher expectations from users of information and radical changes in the ways in which governments operate. This book describes how different approaches are being taken in policy and practical terms in different countries to face these common challenges. It also describes how global - as compared to purely national - needs are emerging for GI and how this demand is being met. The mutation of some national mapping organisations into geographical information utilities and the growth of national geographical information systems are outlined. Framework for the World is developed in 21 chapters written by senior managers involved with the framework from many different countries and drawn from both civilian and military organizations, from the United Nations and from the users of geographical frameworks. Increased global demand for land posits the need for well-designed country-level land policies to protect long-held rights, facilitate land access and address any constraints that land policy may pose for broader growth. While the implementation of land reforms can be a lengthy process, the need to swiftly identify key land policy challenges and devise responses that allow the monitoring of progress, in a way that minimizes conflicts and supports broader development goals, is clear. The Land Governance Assessment Framework (LGAF) makes a substantive contribution to the land sector by providing a quick and innovative tool to monitor land governance at the country level. The LGAF offers a comprehensive diagnostic tool that covers five main areas for policy intervention: Legal and institutional framework; Land use planning, management and taxation; Management of public land; Public provision of land information; and Dispute resolution and conflict management. The LGAF assesses these areas through a set of detailed indicators that are rated on a scale of pre-coded statements (from lack of good governance to good practice). While land governance can be highly technical in nature and tends to be addressed in a partial and sporadic manner, the LGAF posits a tool for a comprehensive assessment, taking into account the broad range of issues that land governance encompasses, while enabling those unfamiliar with land to grasp its full complexity. The LGAF will make it possible for policymakers to make sense of the technical levels of the land sector, benchmark governance, identify areas that require further attention and monitor progress. It is intended to assist countries in prioritizing reforms in the land sector by providing a holistic diagnostic review that can inform policy dialogue in a clear and targeted manner. In addition to presenting the LGAF tool, this book includes detailed case studies on its implementation in five selected countries: Peru, the Kyrgyz Republic, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Tanzania.

Frameworks of World History is a groundbreaking text that uses a clear and consistent analytical approach to studying world history. Author Stephen Morillo--an award-winning teacher with more than twenty-five years of experience teaching World History--frames the study of this vast subject around a model that shows students how to do world history and not just learn about it. While this globally organized text contains all of the essential information, it is the only book that does not just tell what happened, but also shows how and why it happened. Using a framework that examines networks, hierarchies, and culture in world history, Morillo presents a thesis and an argument that students--and instructors--can respond to.

People now view digital services and applications as an essential part of their lives and as carriers of great benefits. Nevertheless, because they provide a new space for criminals, terrorists and others with malicious intent, digital technologies also present significant threats. How can we maintain the freedom and benefits offered by the digital ecosystem while also building into that system safeguards against attacks? The Digital Enlightenment Forum (DigEnlight) takes the view that the new regulatory and legal safeguards required for our digital world must be developed within a framework that incorporates what they call 'digital ethics'. This White Book attempts to draw together the various strands which have emerged from the intense debate within DigEnlight over the last three years. It focuses on how we can negotiate the changing emergent behavior and ethical issues that arise at the heart of debates about the digital world, covering areas such as national security, internet governance, and approaches to privacy and trust, as well as making recommendations to help realize a global social compact for digital security and privacy based on ethical principles. The book represents a meaningful contribution to the ongoing efforts to deal with these important issues, and will be of interest to all those with concerns about the future of our digital world.

A practical guide to how we can positively adapt to a changing world, from the internationally bestselling authors of The 100-Year Life. "Wonderful . . . This thought-provoking book is a must-read." Daron Acemoglu, New York Times bestselling co-author of Why Nations Fail Smart new technologies. Longer, healthier lives. Human progress has risen to great heights, but at the same time it has prompted anxiety about where we're heading. Are our jobs under threat? If we live to 100, will we ever really stop working? And how will this change the way we love, manage and learn from others? One thing is clear: advances in technology have not been matched by the necessary innovation to our social structures. In our era of unprecedented change, we haven't yet discovered new ways of living. Drawing from the fields of economics and psychology, Andrew J. Scott and Lynda Gratton offer a simple framework based on three fundamental principles (Narrate, Explore and Relate) to give you the tools to navigate the challenges ahead. Both a personal road-map and a primer for governments, corporations and colleges, The New Long Life is the essential guide to a longer, smarter, happier life. "This thoughtful book explores how we can reimagine our days and our societies to make our lives better – not just longer." Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take "Stimulating, insightful and inspirational."' Linda Yueh, author of The Great Economists
