An artist both of and before his time: The Old Master who ushered in the modern era Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), one of Spain's most revered and controversial painters, is known for his intense, chilling, and sometimes grotesque paintings depicting the injustice of society with brutal sincerity. A court painter to the Spanish crown, he captured, through his works, a snapshot of life in Spain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Coming at the tail end of the Old Masters period, Goya, with his audacious, subversive, and highly influential works, can be considered the first painter of the modern era. His influence can be seen in the works of artists as varied as Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions.

Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) is one of the undisputed masters of 19th century Spanish painting. He is also often called > because of his bold technique and his belief that the personal vision of the artist is more important than tradition. As a young man in 1775, he worked in the Royal Tapestry Factory of Sainte-Barbe in Madrid, where he studied the masterpieces of Velasquez, who influenced him greatly. After becoming court painter to King Charles III in 1786, he did that series of portraits, religious and genre paintings which brought him fame and prosperity. In 1799, overcome by a profound pessimism, he isolated himself and changed his whole approach to painting. His new style was bold and close to caricature. During the Napoleonic invasion he expressed his horror of conflict in realistic etchings on the atrocities of war. This book presents a comprehensive overview of Goya's painting, engraving and cartoons for tapestries with illustrations and text covering the main incidents of his life.

Keen to learn but short on time? Find out everything you need to know about the life and work of Francisco Goya in just 50 minutes with this straightforward and engaging guide! Francisco Goya is one of the most important figures of Spanish art history, alongside icons such as Diego Velásquez and Pablo Picasso. During his lifetime, he established a reputation as a master portraitist and worked as a court painter to the Spanish Crown, but at the same time produced personal works combining social criticism, a pessimistic vision of humanity and fantastic elements. These apparent contradictions are one of the reasons for the enduring fascination he has exerted over spectators and artists alike: his work had a major influence on painters such as Édouard Manet and Eugène Delacroix, and he is widely considered to be a forerunner of the avant-garde movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. In this book, you will learn about: • The political and social changes that shook Spain during the 18th century • Goya’s most important works, including The Nude Maja and The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters • The response to Goya’s work and his influence on later artists ABOUT 50MINUTES.COM | Art & Literature The Art & Literature series from the 50Minutes collection aims to introduce readers to the figures and movements that have shaped our culture over the centuries.
