Although it has long been accepted that America's most famous modern architect was influenced by traditional Japanese culture, the nature of Frank Lloyd Wright's creative debt to Japan has remained largely unclear. This book suggests that Japan had a more profound impact on Wright's approach to design and his notion of organic architecture in particular than had previously been acknowledged. More specifically, it argues that the influence of Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1853-1908), the leading American authority on Japanese art at the turn of the 20th century, who also happened to be the cousin of Wright's first employer in Chicago, the Shingle Style architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee (1848-1913), was pivotal in bringing together what would eventually become Wright's twin passions of traditional Japanese art and the notion of the organic.Building on the success of the first edition, which won the 1994 AIA International Monograph Award, this revised and expanded version contains new sections on the Western image of Japan as Other, the question of cultural appropriation, and Wright's apparent translation of certain Japanese building forms into his own architectural language.

The Constructed Other Japanese Architecture In The Western Mind written by Kevin Nute and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-30 with Architecture categories.

The Constructed Other argues that the assumed otherness of Japanese architecture has made it both a testbed for Western architectural theories and a source of inspiration for Western designers. The book traces three recurring themes in Western accounts of Japanese architecture from the reopening of Japan in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day: a wish to see Western architectural theories reflected in Japanese buildings; efforts to integrate elements of Japanese architecture into Western buildings; and a desire to connect contemporary Japanese architecture with Japanese tradition. It is suggested that, together, these narratives have had the effect of creating what amounts to a mythical version of Japanese architecture, often at odds with historical fact, but which has exercised a powerful influence on the development of building design internationally.

Interwoven in the essays are stories of champions and critics, rivals and acolytes, books and exhibitions, attitudes toward America and individualism, and the many ways Wright's ideas were brought to the world. Together the essays represent a first look at Wright's impact abroad, some from the perspective of natives of the countries discussed and others from that of informed outsiders."--BOOK JACKET.

While historically there has been an acknowledged exchange of ideas between Japanese and Western architects, so far, the only examinations of this exchange have been limited to detailed studies of a single architect and their influences, such as Frank Lloyd Wright. This book addresses, in four distinct parts, the architectural dialogue between Japan and the West from the opening up of Japan in the 1850s until the end of the C20. Beginning with a section on Japonisme in Europe and America in the C19 and the "giyofu" (fake Western) architecture of Japan, the book then looks at Modern architecture in Japan, Europe and America between the two World Wars. The third section explores Architecture in Japan from 1945 until the Osaka Expo of 1970 and finally, it concludes with a section on Internationalism in Japanese and Western architecture in the late C20. The book addresses both cultures equally, showing that there is much in Western architecture which has come from Japan and that, by drawing upon Western ideas, the architecture of Japan has in many ways come full circle. The book is both a synthesis of hitherto uncollected ideas and a development of familiar and less familiar themes, such as the importance of Japanese art and design to the High Victorian and Arts and Crafts movements, or the complex arguments around Tradition and Modernity in post-War Japanese architecture. The book does not provide a continuous historical narrative, but rather a series of discursive essays or case studies which could be individually read or taken together as part of the whole. It provides an analysis and interpretation which is both critical and explanatory and as a result serves two audiences who are largely unfamiliar with their common architectural ground.
