Han transcurrido ocho a�os desde la publicaci�n de la primera edici�n de la biograf�a de Frank Pa�s. Desde entonces, han salido a la luz nuevos datos relacionados con los asesinatos de Josu� y Frank Pa�s, y la casi certeza de que la traici�n perpetrada por Fidel y Ra�l Castro estaba ya planeada desde M�xico. En 2010 se public� en Cuba un libro titulado La complejidad de la rebeld�a con el objetivo de refutar las pruebas presentadas en mis libros sobre las inexactitudes hist�ricas oficiales. Adem�s de tocar uno por uno los argumentos expuestos en esos libros, el comienzo del cap�tulo 7 es en extremo revelador: "Varias obras fuera del pa�s, escritas principalmente por enemigos de la Revoluci�n Cubana, se han esforzado por confrontar a Frank Pa�s con Fidel Castro. Sin rodeos: �Frank particip� en alg�n intento para limitar o condicionar la proyecci�n pol�tica de Fidel?" Todo lo anterior nos impuls� a preparar esta segunda edici�n. La misma conserva la informaci�n de la primera edici�n. Es una parte importante de la lucha contra la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista en Cuba durante 1952-1958 centrada alrededor de la figura de Frank Pa�s, quien lleg� a alcanzar la jefatura del Movimiento 26 de Julio fundado por Castro. Pa�s, individuo de profundas ra�ces democr�ticas, fue asesinado a la edad de 22 a�os en Santiago de Cuba en condiciones que parecen indicar fueron el resultado de una delaci�n interna. The general perception of modern Latin American political institutions emphasizes a continuing and random process of disorder and crisis, continually out of step with other regions in their progress toward democracy and prosperity. In "History of Political Parties in Twentieth-Century Latin America," Torcuato S. Di Tella demonstrates that this common view lacks context and comparative nuance, and is deeply misleading. Looking behind the scenes of modern Latin American history, he discerns its broad patterns through close analysis of actual events and comparative sociological perspectives that explain the apparent chaos of the past and point toward the more democratic polity now developing. Di Tella argues that although Latin America has peculiarities of its own, they must be understood in their contrasts - and similarities - with both the developed centers and undeveloped peripheries of the world. Latin American societies have been prone to mass rebellions from very early on, more so than in other regions of the world. He analyzes, as well, such significant exceptions to this pattern as Chile, Colombia, and, to a large extent, Brazil. Turning to the other side of the social spectrum, he shows how the underprivileged classes have tended to support strongman populist movements, which have the double character of being aggressive toward the established order, but at the same time repressive of public liberties and of more radical groups. Di Tella provides here a necessary examination of the concept of populism and divides it into several variants. Populism, he maintains, is by no means disappearing, but its variants are instead undergoing important changes with significant bearing on the region's near-term future. "History of Political Parties in Twentieth-Century Latin America" is rich in historical description, but also in its broad review of social structures and of the strengths and weaknesses of political institutions. Choice commented that "this heavily documented volume with an extensive bibliography would prove valuable to researchers and advanced students of Latin America.

When Cuba threw off the yoke of Spanish rule at the end of the nineteenth century, it did so with the help of another foreign power, the United States. Thereafter, the United States became involved in Cuban affairs, intervening twice militarily (1898-1902 and 1906-1909). What was the effect of U.S. intervention? Conventional wisdom indicates that U.S. intervention hindered the rise of militarism in Cuba in the early years of statehood. This pathfinding study, however, takes just the opposite view. Jose M. Hernández argues that while U.S. influence may have checked the worst excesses of the Independence-war veterans who assumed control of Cuba's government, it did not completely deter them from resorting to violence. Thus, a tradition of using violence as a method for transferring power developed in Cuba that often made a mockery of democratic processes. In substantiating this innovative interpretation, Hernández covers a crucial phase in Cuban history that has been neglected by most recent U.S. historians. Correcting stereotypes and myths, he takes a fresh and dispassionate look at Cuba's often romanticized struggle for political emancipation, describing and analyzing in persuasive detail civilmilitary relations throughout the period. This puts national hero Jose Martí's role in the 1895-1898 war of independence in an unusual perspective and sets in bold relief the historical forces that went underground in 1898-1902, only to resurface a few years later. This study will be of interest to all students of hemispheric relations. It presents not only a more accurate picture of the Cuba spawned by American intervention, but also the Cuban side of a story that too frequently has been told solely from the U.S. point of view.
