While fraud is generally associated with the business world, this book demonstrates that there is also a good deal of fraud and deception among scientists, writers and philanthropists. Scientists will sometimes announce fraudulent findings in order to raise money for additional research projects. Since many scientists live by this "soft" money and have no other income, the temptation to claim results that never occurred is great. Likewise, authors and journalists may commit fraud by claiming that they saw some thing that they did not see or that an event occurred which never happened. There are also writers who steal the work of others and publish such material under their own name. There are executives of charitable organizations who steal the money donated to a charitable cause and there are clergy who steal from the members of their own parish, or sell objects that do not belong to them. Some members of the clergy use their trusted office to gain sexual favors from congregants while others entertain their friends at the expense of their congregations. This work is well documented and demonstrates that the notion of the aloof scientists or holy clergy may be no more than a myth, and that even in these professions all things are not what they seem. This book arose from the authors knowledge of a small number of doctors who were not behaving in a professional or proper manner. As he read about them, he found he was astonished at the extent of some offenders. Any human being can have flaws in their character, personality disorders or mental illnesses, what if that person is your doctor? This book takes the reader on a journey from the colorful life of Geoffrey Edelsten through Medawar's The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice, a fertility specialist who used his own sperm to impregnate over 50 women without their knowledge to the lasting and devastating effects of the MMR vaccine debacle. The author suggests that a test needs to be devised to detect character flaws such as greed before they harm innocent people through fraud and deceit. As much a reference book as it is a celebration of the brave'whistleblower'and witty commentary on human nature, capturing the imagination, leading the reader to wonder why people make the decisions they do. Anderson himself had a colorful life and a brilliant career, leaving an immeasurable legacy to medicine. His wish was that this book would prompt change, leading to enhanced integrity in the medical and scientific world.

In the early modern period, deceit and fraud were common issues. Acutely aware of the ubiquity and multiplicity of simulation and dissimulation, people from this period made serious efforts to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon, trying to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable, pleasant and unpleasant, wicked and virtuous forms of deceit, and seeking to unravel its principles, strategies, and functions. The twelve case-studies in this volume focus on the use of deceit by several groups of people in different spheres of life, as well as on its representation in literary and artistic genres, and its conceptualization in philosophical and rhetorical discourses. The studies testify to the rich variety of deceitful strategies applied by people from the early modern period, as well as to the subtlety and diversity of the conceptual frameworks they construed in order to grasp the many aspects of the elusive yet all-pervasive phenomenon of deceit. Contributors include: Daniel Acke, Jacques Bos, Wiep van Bunge, Evelien Chayes, Paul J.C.M. Franssen, Paul van Heck, Toon van Houdt, Alfons K.L. Thijs, Bert Timmermans, Johannes Trapman, Mark van Vaeck, Natascha Veldhorst, and Johan Verberckmoes.
