Weshalb kommt in den Werken von Malerinnen der nackte Körper auffallend seltener vor als in denen von männlichen Künstlern? Dieser Frage wird in einer tiefenpsychologischen Untersuchung nachgegangen, die durch einen kunsthistorischen Abriß der Aktkunst von der Antike bis zur Moderne eingeleitet wird. Die geschlechtsspezifische Sozialisation der Frau und deren Auswirkungen auf die Kreativität wird anhand psychoanalytischer Theorien beschrieben, wobei die präödipale Phase besonders berücksichtigt wird. Der Blick in seiner vielfältigen Bedeutung innerhalb der Entwicklung vom Säugling bis zum Erwachsenen wird untersucht. Ferner werden die geschlechtsspezifischen Blickstrukturen vor allem hinsichtlich der Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmung der Frau erörtert. Die Betrachtungen beziehen sich nicht nur auf die Malerei von Frauen, sondern auch auf das Medium Film und die Performance-Kunst.
