Jahrhundert hatte neben vielen anderen Veränderungen auch die Trennung von Beruf und Familie zur Folge, welche durch den Übergang zur Lohnarbeit erzielt wurde. Angestellte jeglicher Art wurden nicht mehr als zur Familie gehörende Personen gezählt, weshalb sich auch eine räumliche Trennung zwischen ihnen und den Familienmitgliedern vollzog. Gleichermaßen betraf dies auch die zu einer Familie gehörenden Personen, die nun nicht mehr nur innerhalb der Familie tätig waren, sondern auch in anderen Institutionen. Die Familie als Produktionsgemeinschaft war demzufolge rückläufig. Mit der zunehmenden Bedeutung der Geldwirtschaft kam es zur Abschaffung der Naturalwirtschaft. „Infolge der Trennung der Bereiche von Produktion und Konsumtion wurde die Familie privatisiert, und dieser neue Bereich des Privaten wurde zugleich intimisiert und emotionalisiert“ (Herrmann 1994, S.192). Die Erziehung der Kinder gewann zunehmend an Bedeutung und wurde zur wichtigsten Bestimmung der Frau. Meist erhielten jedoch nur die Jungen eine Schul- und Berufsausbildung, da es für sie als spätere Ernährer einer Familie als notwendig angesehen wurde. Die Frau sollte sich nur noch um familiäre Aufgaben kümmern, deshalb wurde der Mann zum materiellen Versorger der Familie. Die strenge Hierarchie in der Familie begann sich aufzulockern. Trotzdem blieben klare Rollen- und Aufgabenverteilungen noch bestehen. Bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts kam der Frau und Mutter verstärkt die Aufgabe zu, den Haushalt zu führen und sich um emotionale Bereiche innerhalb der Familie zu kümmern. Damit wurde sie aus der Produktion ausgeschlossen (vgl. Peuckert 1996, S.20ff). Dem Mann, als autoritäre Person, „obliegen die Außenbeziehungen und die instrumentellen Aspekte des Familienlebens“ (Peuckert 1996, S.22). Auch heute noch ist die Erwerbstätigkeit von Frauen und besonders von Müttern ein viel diskutiertes Thema. Obwohl seit Mitte der 90er Jahre die Anzahl erwerbstätiger Frauen nur gering angestiegen ist, zeigt sich eine deutlich steigende Tendenz verheirateter erwerbstätiger Frauen. Ebenso kann eine deutliche Steigerung beruflich engagierter Mütter verzeichnet werden, insbesondere dann, wenn die Kinder bereits die Schule besuchen (vgl. Nauck 1993, S.7).
