Education for Democracy in England in World War II examines the educational discourse and involvement in wartime educational reforms of five important figures: Fred Clarke, R. H. Tawney, Shena Simon, H. C. Dent and Ernest Simon. These figures campaigned for educational reforms through their books, publishing articles in newspapers, delivering speeches at schools and conferences and by organizing pressure groups. The life stories of a Jewish slave girl thriving in The Roman Empire and a farm boy discovering a larger world are entwined. Many centuries later a prairie farm boy commences his search for rational answers in his religious world. His life's path will lead him far and wide, first to a military adventure and later an airline and farming career. However, he never escapes his atheism. Like Lectra he will study and use philosophy to aid his search. Unlike Lectra he will have the help of modern day science to aide in his search. They both find their long sought answer and are at peace with it.
