Excerpt from Free Hand Drawing and Designing One of the greatest requirements of the modern engineer is to be able to make rapid neat sketches freehand, i. e. without the use of any drafting instruments, but simply by employing a well sharpened soft pencil and an eraser. There are many cases in the daily practice of every engineer from the lowest to the highest ranks, when they are called upon to make a free-hand sketch of a job, and in some cases this rough sketch remains later the only available record of the condition of the job before any changes took place. It is therefore important to have such sketches done as neatly and accurately as possible so that they would convey the correct idea to the draftsman or to the man who is to carry out the particular work represented by such sketches. There are two principal kinds of sketches employed in describing engineering work: the actual picture of the job, as it appears to the eye; and the orthographic projection of the object in the three principal planes, but drawn roughly without the aid of instruments and not to correct scale. We will endeavor in the following chapters to cover the principles of both types of sketching, beginning with the simplest objects first and then leading up to the free-hand drawing of more or less complicated parts of machinery. The sketch in perspective is vital in design presentations whether at the design academy or in meetings with contractors - every architect needs to master this craft. Basics Freehand Drawing explains step-by-step how to develop a perspective drawing from the initial structure of the image to various drawing techniques and use of color. It also shows in numerous color illustrations different drawing techniques and examples of presenting perspective drawings of buildings, interiors, and details.

Drawn To Design written by Eric J. Jenkins and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-15 with Architecture categories.

The book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a compliment to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of “façade” are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between "traditional vs. digital" gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and natural world through freehand drawing. The author, Eric Jenkins has received several teaching awards and design awards. He is Associate Professor at Catholic University of America's School of Architecture and Planning where he teaches design, theory and analytical sketching. He earned a Masters in Design Studies from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and has previously published “To Scale: One Hundred Urban Plans”.
