During the nineteenth century, France experienced an unprecedented growth in the visual arts, and Paris was its center. French art became a universally accepted benchmark, spreading its many ground-breaking developments -- the radicalism of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, the daring of Art Nouveau, and the innovations of Haussman's new urban landscape -- far beyond its borders, and in return receiving numerous influences from broad. During this extraordinary rich and productive period, French art also benefited from the synthesis of the past with the innovations of the present, resulting in an artistic output whose legacy is still being felt today. This chronological history, richly illustrated and recounted by experts from France's preeminent museums, charts the growth of this fruitful -- and revolutionary -- period in the history of world art. -- From publisher's description.

Tradition & Revolution in French Art brings together over 100 paintings and drawings of the 18th and 19th centuries from the Musee des Beaux-Arts at Lille, one of the greatest of the French provincial museums. The catalogue and the exhibition it accompanies demonstrate the diversity and richness of French art of the period and provide an important overview of the major movements and stylistic developments that flourished throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The Neo-Classicism of David, the Romanticism of Delacroix and Gericault, and the Realism of Courbet - aspects of French art that are hardly represented in British public collections - are seen against a background of traditional academic history and religious painting in a survey of the period that, unusually, does not begin or end at 1800 or exaggerate one theme - such as the distinct or novel character of Romantic painting or plein-air landscape. Conventionally, French art has been discussed in terms of polarities - Romantic art opposed to Neo-Classical, Realism in revolt against the academic, the avant-garde versus the official - but at the time the situation was more complex and more dynamic and, as this book demonstrates, some traditional ideas could themselves be revolutionary and some revolutionary art was in many respects traditional. The introductory essays, which give a clear account in English of a crucial period in the history of French art, discuss history and religious paintings, the major institutions for exhibiting and selling art in France, the educational ideals, and the market which shaped the nature of French painting in those years. And in describing the formation of the superb collection at Lille the book also provides a study of the rise of 19th-century French public collections of contemporary art.

Sick of striving? Giving up on grit? Had enough of hustle culture? Daunted by the 10,000-hour rule? Relax: As the French know, it's the best way to be better at everything. In the realm of love, what could be less seductive than someone who's trying to seduce you? Seduction is the art of succeeding without trying, and that's a lesson the French have mastered. We can see it in their laissez-faire parenting, chic style, haute cuisine, and enviable home cooking: they barely seem to be trying, yet the results are world-famous, thanks to a certain je ne sais quoi that is the key to a more creative, fulfilling, and productive life. For fans of both Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Alain de Botton's How Proust Can Change Your Life, philosopher Ollivier Pourriol's book draws on the examples of such French legends as Descartes, Stendhal, Rodin, Cyrano de Bergerac and Françoise Sagan to show how to be efficient à la française, and how to effortlessly reap the rewards.

Excerpt from French Art: Classic and Contemporary Painting and Sculpture Advantage has been taken of the present illustrated edition of this book to add a chapter on "Rodin and the Institute," in which the progress of what ten years ago was altogether a "new movement in sculpture," is further considered. Except in sculpture, and in the sculpture of Rodin and that more or less directly influenced by him, there has been no new phase of French art developed within the decade - at least none important enough to impose other additions to the text of a work so general in character.
