Excerpt from French Course, Second Year This "Second Course," like the First, is based on the following principles, the soundness of which has been proved by years of practical experience: - (1) A living language must be heard before being seen. (2) The actions, persons, objects, scenes described must be imagined; i.e. seen in the mind, while the teacher speaks. (3) Every sentence contains a basic word (generally the verb) which should be learnt first. (4) Sentences are much more easily remembered if they are learnt in their logical succession. (5) Subjective sentences (expressing thoughts, feelings, judgments, etc.) are best learnt by oral teaching in the form of conversation. Directions are given on pages 1 to 4 of the First Course for the rational teaching and study of the exercises, verbs, and conversation sentences. In addition to the Exercises and Conversation sentences, rules of grammar are given, in French as well as in English, and should be learnt in French. Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. Excerpt from Macmillan's Progressive French Course, Vol. 2: Second Year, Containing an Elementary Grammar With Copious Exercises, Notes, and Vocabularies The fundamental principle underlying the Whole Course theory and practice running in parallel lines throughout remains unaltered. The order of the Lessons, too, and the colloquial character of the Exercises, having now stood success fully the severe test of twelve years' practical work in hundreds of classrooms, have been left untouehed. In those few points of detail, however, where the subject matter clearly seemed to call for more careful and lucid exposi tion, the pruning hook has been applied With unsparing hand. Excerpt from Classic French Course in English The preparation of the present volume proposed to the author a task more difficult far than that undertaken in either of the two volumes chronologically preceding it in the group, The After-School Series, to which it belongs. Those volumes dealt with literatures limited and finished; this volume deals with a literature indefinitely vast in extent, and still in vital process of growth. The selection of material to be used was, in the case of the earlier volumes, virtually made for the author beforehand, in a manner greatly to ease his sense of responsibility for the exercise of individual judgment and taste. Long prescription, joined to the winnowing effect of wear and waste through time and chance, had left little doubt what works of what writers, Greek and Roman, best deserved now to be shown to the general reader. Besides this, the prevalent custom of the schools of classical learning could then wisely be taken as a clew of guidance to be implicitly followed, whatever might be the path through which it should lead. There is here no similar avoidance of responsibility possible; for the schools have not established a custom, and French literature is a living body, from which no important members have ever yet been rent by the ravages of time. The plan of this volume, together with the compass proposed for it, created the necessity of establishing from the outset certain limits to be very strictly observed. There could be no introductory general matter, beyond a rapid and summary review of that literature, as a whole, which is the subject of the book. The list of authors selected for representation must not include the names of any still living. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Essentials of French Grammar School classes should, in general, follow the sequence of lessons indicated just below the chapter headings. As 79 of the 185 chapters are used twice (the most important paradigms and rules being te viewed), there are in all 264 lessons. Classes that have four recitations a week for 33 weeks will thus be provided with a full two years' course. Classes that have only three periods a week can take Lessons 1-99 the first year, and Lessons 100-198 the second, Lessons 199-264 being omitted altogether or reserved for a third year. Either the first 99 or the first I 32 lessons make a well rounded first year's course, covering all that is absolutely indispensable in French grammar. In schools where there are more than four or less than three recitations a week, other arrangements of the lessons can be made. It will, indeed, Often be found advisable to deviate in various ways from the suggested program: for instance, in classical schools two lessons can frequently be taken at a time; while classes that have only one year of French can, if necessary, omit the first fifteen chapters, and learn pro nunciation in connection with their reading. The French Text and all the paradigms and examples contained in a lesson should, in any case, be pronounced by the pupils after the teacher, before the lesson is pre pared. When a lesson consists of a review of preceding chapters, the French texts and the exercises of those chapters are not included in the lesson. The Supplementary Exercises do not form an essential part of the course: they are intended for review, for use in alternate years, and for classes that are able to spend a great deal of time on grammar. The lessons from no. 28 on are so constructed as to require only a small amount of study, in order that pupils may have plenty of time to devote to the preparation of translation.
