The works of the 17th-century French harpsichord composers, the clavecinistes, are among the principal treasures of the harpsichord repertoire. It is a commmonplace of music histories that their style was strongly influenced by contemporary lutenists, yet the assessment of this influence has until now been limited to pointing out a few superficial resemblances. This book is the first comprehensive account of the relationship between the two styles. The nature and extent of the influence can now be seen as much more far-reaching than has been supposed. The clavecinistes adopted many details of lute style, and an understanding of these is essential for the proper performance of their works. More importantly, the lute style opened up the possibility of an entirely new expressive dimension in the playing of the harpsichord; in exploring this the clavecinistes evolved a style which dominated European keyboard music in the 17th-century, and provided a basis for the subsequent development of idiomatic keyboard style.

This catalogue completes the bibliographic survey of French harpsichord music begun in Bruce Gustafson's French Harpsichord Music of the Seventeenth Century: A Thematic Catalogue of Sources with Commentary (Ann Arbor, 1979). It has entries for all of the printed music known to have existed, over 230 volumes, and 150 manuscripts. It offers precise transcriptions of the title pages, full contents, dating, locations, editions, facsimiles, evaluations in the contemporary press, identifications of dedicatees, and stylistic comments. The eighteenth-century French harpsichord repertory is shown to extend from 1699 to about 1780, from Louis Marchand's Pieces de clavecin to the four Symphonies concertantes by Jean-Francois Tapray that juxtapose the harpsichord and piano as solo instruments. All original keyboard music is included.Since the introduction of the piano into France occurred during the twenty years preceding 1780, this Catalogue includes some music that may have been intended for that instrument rather than for the harpsichord. This period of transition is discussed in full in the Introduction.

Principles Of The Harpsichord By Monsieur De Saint Lambert written by St Lambert and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984-03-15 with Music categories.

Saint Lambert's Principles of the Harpsichord of 1702 was the first tutor for harpsichord to be published in France. It draws upon the dance-oriented harpsichord style developed during the reign of Louis XIV by such masters as Jacques Champion de Chambonnierès, Louis Couperin, and Jean Henry d'Anglebert. In subject matter it ranges from the fundamentals of music through questions of meter and tempo to particulars of harpsichord technique and ornamentation. Because of its broad scope it is an important source of information about both late seventeenth-century French performance practice and music theory. It provides a good complement to Francois Couperin's well-known book l'Art de toucher le clavecin of 1717 in that it deals with the musical style of the generation preceding Couperin and includes subjects not discussed by him. Although nothing is known about Saint Lambert himself, it is clear from this work that as a teacher he was thorough, sympathetic, and open-minded. His book is deserving of a place on the shelf of anyone, professional or amateur, who is interested in the music of the Grand Siècle. For this first English edition, Rebecca Harris-Warrick has added a substantial introduction and full annotation throughout the text [Publisher description]

Couperin written by David Tunley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The Couperin family occupies the same dominant position in French musical life of the Baroque era as does the Bach family in Germany. However, there was never any doubt who was the most commanding figure in the family: even in his lifetime, Francois Couperin was known as Couperin le Grand. His contribution to the literature of keyboard music has prompted comparisons with Bach in its mastery and Chopin in its precision of feeling and poetic insight. This guide examines not only the Ordres or Suites but the whole of his output including the organ masses, motets and chamber music.
