Excerpt from French Life in Town and Country It is true that the townsman all over the land is largely governed by a need for excitement, and having, as a rule, no personal initiative to enable him to minister to it, he contents himself with looking toward the capital with envy, and devours the newspapers from Paris in eager ex pectation of the something he is in daily hope Of happening. But whatever does happen in Paris rarely makes itself felt in the intellectually sleepy, industrious provinces thanks to which wide-spread Spirit of commercial and bucolic denseness to the inflammatory influences of the capital, France thrives now as she throve before the war, when at a word she could produce funds to pay off an enormous indemnity, with out flinching or hesitating. The strangest of all these begging-customs, however, is the one in vogue between Christmas and Twelfth Night. Then the children go out in couples, each boy carrying an earthenware pot, over which a bladder is stretched, with a piece of stick tied in the middle. When this stick is twirled about, a not very melodious grumbling sound proceeds from the contrivance, which is known by the name of 'Rommelpot.' By going about in this manner the children are able to collect some few pence to buy bread--or gin--for their fathers. When they stop before any one's house, they drawl out, 'Give me a cent, and I will pass on, for I have no money to buy bread.'

Anatole France (1844-1924), born Franois-Anatole Thibault, was a French author. He studied at the Collge Stanislas and after graduation he helped his father by working at his bookstore. After several years he secured the position of a cataloguer at Bacheline- Deflorenne and at Lemerre, and in 1876 he was appointed a librarian for the French Senate. He became known after the publication of The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard (1881). Along with Emile Zola, he became involved in the Alfred Dreyfus affair. He signed Zola's manifesto, publicly condemning the indictment of treason against Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain, who was being scapegoated to protect corrupt officials in the army. In 1901, France wrote about the affair in his book Monsieur Bergeret. He was elected to the French Academy in 1896 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921. His later works include The Procurator of Judea (1902), Penguin Island (1908) and The Revolt of the Angels (1914).
