Field-Marshal French is best known for his military services during the First World War; however, his military service stretches back through to his commands in the Boer War. In his campaigns with the newly formed cavalry division he was to receive much acclaim and praise for his adroit handling of his troops and their effectiveness against the largely irregular Boers. He won the battle of Elanslaagte and, having escaped the encirclement of Ladysmith, led his troops on to the capture of Bloemfontain and the relief of Kimberley. Tough and uncompromising, he became a celebrity with the papers back home, his character summed up by the verse: “E’s so tough and terse ‘E don’t want no bloomin’ nurse and ‘E ain’t had one reverse Ave yer, French?” This book charts Colonel French’s adventurous division across the vledts and kops of the South African landscape with pace and verve. The author, John George Maydon, was a prominent member of the Natal parliament that accompanied Colonel French on his cavalry campaign and writes from this unique perspective combining local South African knowledge with a loyalist viewpoint.

Excerpt from The Diary of a Cavalry Officer: In the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns, 1809-1815 He was thanked in the general orders of the day of January 22nd, 1811, and recommended for promotion in the Duke of Wellington's despatch to the Horse Guards of May 14th of the same year. In 1812 he was gazetted a Captain in the 60th Regiment, from which he exchanged back into his old regiment without leaving it. It is somewhat remarkable that, while severely wounded in four places in almost his first skirmish, he passed practically unscathed through four years' service in the Peninsula and the Waterloo campaigns, although under fire, to the best of his recollection, on nearly one hundred occasions. He received the Peninsular and Waterloo medals, with clasps for the actions of Busaco, Fuentes, Salamanca, and Vittoria. Of his character it may be said that, simple in tastes and habits, quiet and unassuming in demeanour, yet prompt and decisive in action, of iron constitution, and an excellent rider, he was in all respects a worthy follower of the great leader under whom he served. He retired on half pay in 1821, and settling at Willington in his native county, engaged actively in the duties and pursuits of a country gentleman, as a magistrate, landlord, and sportsman. In the hunting field he became as distinguished as in the field of battle, and with his two brothers formed one of the trio sung by the Cheshire poet as "The brothers three from Dorfold sprung whom none of us could beat." He married, in 1836, Susan, daughter of Thomas Tarleton, Esq., of Bolesworth Castle, Cheshire (by Frances, daughter of Philip Egerton, Esq., of Oulton Park), and sister of the late Admiral Sir Walter Tarleton, K.C.B., and died in 1872, in his 83rd year, leaving surviving issue four sons and two daughters. One of the former is Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Tomkinson, now in command of the 1st Royal Dragoons, and upon me, as his heir and successor, devolves the duty of editing his diary. Excerpt from Cavalry Studies From Two Great Wars The three monographs united in this volume are each believed to possess peculiar and positive merit. The work of Colonel (now General) Bonie appeared very soon after the close of the Franco-German War, having been written, as it were, in the smoke of battle. In this respect it differs materially from the book of Major Kaehler, which is a recent production, and now makes its appearance in English for the first time. While Kaehler, unlike Bonie, does not write as an eye-witness and with the experience of an actual participator in the events described, he has had the advantage of historical researches which were not available to the French author, and though his book is naturally a less vivid picture, it can doubtless lay claim to greater historical accuracy than that of its companion. The essay on "The Operations of the Cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign," by Lieutenant-Colonel George B. Davis, U.S.A., first appeared in the Journal of the U. S. Cavalry Association, several years ago; but it has been revised by its author especially for the International Series. It is presented in this volume, not only because of its intrinsic merit as a study of the methods of the cavalry in one of our greatest campaigns, but also because of the picture it presents of the screening and reconnoitering duty of cavalry more than seven years before the performance of similar duty by the German cavalry astonished Europe as with a new discovery in war.
