Field-Marshal French is best known for his military services during the First World War; however, his military service stretches back through to his commands in the Boer War. In his campaigns with the newly formed cavalry division he was to receive much acclaim and praise for his adroit handling of his troops and their effectiveness against the largely irregular Boers. He won the battle of Elanslaagte and, having escaped the encirclement of Ladysmith, led his troops on to the capture of Bloemfontain and the relief of Kimberley. Tough and uncompromising, he became a celebrity with the papers back home, his character summed up by the verse: “E’s so tough and terse ‘E don’t want no bloomin’ nurse and ‘E ain’t had one reverse Ave yer, French?” This book charts Colonel French’s adventurous division across the vledts and kops of the South African landscape with pace and verve. The author, John George Maydon, was a prominent member of the Natal parliament that accompanied Colonel French on his cavalry campaign and writes from this unique perspective combining local South African knowledge with a loyalist viewpoint.

Excerpt from French's Cavalry Campaign That a struggle between the two Caucasian races in South Africa was so impossible an occurrence as the surface politician and the general mass Of the inhabitants of Great Britain believed, nobody would maintain who had either lived observantly in the Transvaal for the ten years, or in the Orange Free State for the five years, before the war, or who had studied the story of the two peoples, particularly in relation to the Cape. The outbreak of the Seven Years War saw the formation of new alliances and led to the conduct of military operations in several theaters simultaneously. The campaign of 1757 saw large-scale maneuvers, with their necessary operational corollaries of supply and logistics, as France put an army of 100,000 men into the field. The conduct of the campaign also testifies to the difficulty of exercising command in the face of a court and a government for which short-term results took precedence over means. Notwithstanding such difficulties, the campaign of the French armies in Westphalia saw its climax play out around the village of Hastenbeck on 26 July 1757, where the forces of Maréchal d'Estrées gained a victory that came close to knocking Hanover out of the war. The story of the campaign can be told from the human perspective thanks to the large body of memoirs and letters from officers, both general and subordinate, of cavalry and infantry regiments. Having left their garrisons four months earlier, they had come to battle at the gates of Hanover after having traveled more than 600 kilometers through the Low Countries and into Germany.

Napoleon wrote “Cavalry is useful before, during and after the battle”; and so it was with his final campaign of Waterloo. Few campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars are as instructive as to the use (and mis-use) of cavalry; from the lethal French cavalry at Quatre Bras, to the initially brilliant, but ultimately badly executed, British heavies charging at Waterloo itself. Sir Evelyn Wood himself had served in the cavalry for many years and wrote extensively on the subject, his expertise brought to bear on illuminating the cavalry actions of the short but epoch shaping Waterloo Campaign. Field Marshal Wood was a man of enormous military experience, having fought with distinction in the Crimea, India, the Zulu and Boer wars. It was during the Indian Mutiny that he was awarded a Victoria Cross for selflessly leading his troop of cavalry against rebel forces and rescuing a local merchant from being hung by bandits. Title – Cavalry in the Waterloo Campaign Author — Field Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C. G.C.B. (1838-1919) Text taken, whole and complete, from the second edition published in 1895, London, Sampson Low, Marston and Company Original – x and 203 pages. Illustrations — 10 maps, plans and illustrations.
