En Frente al mar de Timor, preludio de Pretérito Perfecto (1983), una pluralidad de personajes, de voces y de registros insospechados dan pie al tratamiento de una variedad de temas: el amor entre Maximiliano y Camila, el desencanto del mundo y la invención de una cosmogonía privada que permita auscultar el pasado buscando comprender el presente. Los personajes intentan superar el caos de la realidad resguardándose en la libertad de la imaginación donde toda ocurrencia es posible: el espacio cerrado de un cuarto en penumbras puede abrirse a la incandescente luz del día y los cuerpos de los amantes recorrer las calles de Tucumán o lugares remotos y distantes en el tiempo, hasta convertirse en los primeros habitantes de la tierra y, de ese hipotético paraiso, retornar al presente a continuar la conversación con sus amigos. Todo pareciera ser vivido en simultáneo y el relato se transforma en máquina veloz, en ojo impasible que observa la totalidad del universo. A partir de estas tensiones —según la visión de un personaje primordial, el poeta Cienfuegos—, el arte es “un tumor de la cultura”, la escritura se vuelve “una desmoralizadora pasión de amontonar palabras” y el mar de Timor (la eternidad) una meta inalcanzable. Las ideas expuestas, impregnadas de escepticismo, intensidad y belleza, se unen a preocupaciones que exceden el ámbito local y recobran fuerza inusitada: la amenaza nuclear, los avances científicos y tecnológicos, la destrucción de la naturaleza. La capacidad de apertura hacia lo nuevo y hacia otros horizontes geográficos marca la diferencia entre la obra de Hugo Foguet y la literatura que le precede en la región, en tanto se vincula sin conflicto al cosmopolitismo propio de la cultura latinoamericana. Gay and lesbian themes in Latin American literature have been largely ignored. This reference fills this gap by providing more than a hundred alphabetically arranged entries for Latin American authors who have treated gay or lesbian material in their works. Each entry explores the significance of gay and lesbian themes in a particular author's writings and closes with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The figures included have a professed gay identity, or have written on gay or lesbian themes in either a positive or negative way, or have authored works in which a gay sensibility can be identified. Ernesto Cardenal and Sergio Ramírez are two of the most influential Latin American intellectuals of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Addressing Nicaragua's struggle for self-definition from divergent ethnic, religious, generational, political, and class backgrounds, they constructed distinct yet compatible visions of national history, anchored in a reappraisal of the early twentieth-century insurgent leader Augusto César Sandino. Si como señala Ivan Jablonka, tanto la novela como la historia producen conocimiento de lo real, entre estas discursividades se genera una zona de indeterminación, un espacio de vacilación, rememoración y acción. Una suerte de barricada, una línea móvil imaginaria y certera para reescribir el pasado, el presente y el futuro.

Hay una idea de totalidad en la escritura foguetiana: abarcar la historia de Tucumán, hacer de la ciudad de San Miguel de Tucumán no un paisaje sino una topología, un sujeto que habla, explorar el fin de la modernidad por medio de los episodios locales y mundiales de las décadas del 60 y 70, etc. Sin pretensión de realizar un análisis exhaustivo de la novela, Geirola -en este ensayo escrito a principios de la década de 1990, perdido y rescatado en mayo de 2018 del mal de archivo-se detiene en algunos aspectos que hacen del texto foguetiano un acontecimiento narrativo para la literatura argentina

In a rapidly changing post-Cost War world, where many age-old conflicts and injustices are at last being put to rights, East Timor stands out as a still unresolved tragedy. In the past twenty years (1975–95), this former Portuguese colony has been under Indonesian military occupation, an occupation responsible for the death of over 200,000 of its inhabitants (a third of its pre-1975 population) and the destruction of much of its indigenous society. Yet, despite enormous odds, the people of East Timor continue to fight for the independence which was denied them in the mid-1970s. Twenty years on, there is now a very real chance for a new beginning in East Timor. This book, which brings together contributions by both East Timorese and Western specialists of East Timor, provides a compelling account of the process by which a once isolated and traditional society has been forged into a nation with a deep sense of its own identity rooted it its unique religious, cultural, linguistic, and historical heritage. Indonesia is at last beginning to realize the cost of Third World colonialism, and its Western allies are becoming less tolerant of its ‘security state’ methods. The last section of this book considers the new diplomatic initiatives which are currently in train, under the auspices of the UN, to bring about a resolution to the Timor problem without jeopardizing the integrity of the Indonesian Republic. An extensive bibliography of titles on East Timor published between 1970 and 1994 will prove especially useful for scholars.
