Brigitte Gasser untersucht und vergleicht die Empathiefähigkeit bei 12- bis 13-Jährigen mit ihrer Empathie gegenüber Medienfiguren. Ausgehend von einer Unterteilung von Empathie in realen und fiktionalen Welten werden psychologische und medienwissenschaftliche Erklärungsansätze betrachtet. Die Entwicklung von Empathie wird aufgrund der psychologischen Forschung dargestellt, woran sich auch die affektiven und kognitiven Aspekte von Empathie aufzeigen lassen. Daneben wird aus einer medienwissenschaftlichen Perspektive auf empathische Mechanismen bei unterschiedlichen Medienarten (Bücher, Filme, Computerspiele) eingegangen. Auf der Grundlage von qualitativen und quantitativen Untersuchungen belegt die Autorin, dass die Empathiewerte von Kindern im Alltag in einem Zusammenhang mit den von ihnen bevorzugten Medienarten stehen. Je höher die Empathiewerte, desto ausgeprägter ist die Präferenz für Medienarten, bei denen zum Verständnis und Genuss der Inhalte empathische Fähigkeiten vorausgeSetzt werden. Ein gegensätzliches Bild zeigt sich bei niedrigeren Empathiewerten. Hier werden Medienangebote bevorzugt, bei denen empathische Fähigkeiten zur Rezeption keine zentrale Rolle spielen. Die Ergebnisse deuten daraufhin, dass Kinder mit hoher Empathie aufgrund ihrer Mediennutzung ihre empathischen Fähigkeiten – sowohl für den Alltag als auch für die Mediennutzung – stärken. Kinder mit niedrigerer Empathie schulen aufgrund ihrer Medienwahl ihre empathischen Fähigkeiten hingegen nicht bei der Mediennutzung.

Zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation ist für das gesellschaftliche Miteinander unverzichtbar und ein allgegenwärtiges Thema wissenschaftlicher und nicht-wissenschaftlicher Überlegungen. Viele der in diversen Ratgebern und Studien vertretenen Theorien beginnen ihre Ausführungen mit der Übertragung des informationstheoretischen Sender-Empfänger-Modells auf den Prozess der zwischenmenschlichen Verständigung. Dieses sehr populäre Modell weist aber nach Ansicht von Henrik Dindas gravierende Mängel auf. Der Autor stellt daher dessen (unbedachte) Übertragung in der vorliegenden Studie umfassend in Frage. Er stützt sich dabei auf semiotische Ansätze von Charles Sanders Peirce sowie der Würzburger Schule der Denkpsychologie – mit besonderem Fokus auf das Werk Karl Bühlers. Sprache avanciert dabei zum Medium der Selbsterfahrung des Menschen und veranschaulicht die Absurdität der bekannten Aussage, man könne "nicht nicht kommunizieren". Dindas diskutiert prominente Kommunikationsmodelle und vergleicht diese mit dem Semiotik-Verständnis des irischen Schriftstellers Samuel Beckett, für den Kommunikation ein zentraler Aspekt in seinem Werk war.
