Das Buch bildet die konsequente Fortsetzung der bislang 5 Bände umfassenden Reihe zur Biographie und Wirkungsgeschichte des Nationalökonomen Friedrich List (1789-1846), die seit 2013 im Verlag SpringerGabler erschienen ist. In dem vorliegenden Band wird Lists Bedeutung als Entwicklungstheoretiker und -politiker erstmals umfassend beleuchtet. Ausgangspunkt sind seine Bemühungen zur wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung der deutschen Territorialstaaten, die in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Vergleich zu England und Frankreich Entwicklungsländer waren. Darauf aufbauend werden die Ansichten und Theorien von Lists Entwicklungspolitik dargestellt, wie sie heute in der Dritten Welt bestehen bzw. gang und gäbe sind. Daraus werden frappierende Parallelen und Analogien ersichtlich, die deutlich machen, wie visionär List dachte. Im Zusammenhang mit der List-Rezeption in Lateinamerika, Indien, Japan, China und Ozeanien werden diese Ideen vertieft und auf ihre praktische Anwendung übertragen. Anschließend werden die Kardinalprobleme der Weltwirtschaft dargestellt und ebenfalls mit Lists Visionen verglichen. Dies unterstreicht eindrucksvoll die Weitsicht dieses genialen und viel verkannten deutschen Nationalökonomen.

Friedrich List (1789-1846) war eine zentrale Figur des Liberalismus im Vormärz.
