"Unter den Vielen, die aus Schillers vortrefflichen Werken Genuss schopften, fanden sich nach meiner Erfahrung immer Mehrere, welche nur durch das Feuer und die Kraft jenes grossen Genies hingerissen wurden, ohne dass ihnen jedesmal der eigentliche Standpunkt seiner Kunstschopfungen, oder jede einzelne Schonheit klar geworden ware. In der Tat fordern auch die meisten Schillerschen Werke nebst mehreren Vorkenntnissen eine Iangere und anhaltendere Betrachtung, wenn ihre Vorzuge tief und ganz empfunden werden sollen. In vielen seiner Lehrgedichte zum Beispiele, finden sich nicht selten kuhne Odensprunge und Ubergange; und mehrere davon sind sogar von der Art, dass sie ohne Kenntnis der Kantischen Lehre vom Schonen und Erhabenen gar nicht verstanden werden konnen. Schillers dramatische Werke sind naturlich mehr auf allgemeine Fasslichkeit berechnet, aber auch bei ihnen ist oft der Standpunkt des Dichters und Lesers nicht leicht zu treffen, und manche sinnvolle Schonheit kann nur bei genauerer Beobachtung aufgefunden werden.
