Im Jahr 1889 malte Fritz von Uhde die Kinderstube, die seine drei Töchter in ihrem Spiel- und Schlafraum zeigt. Wie selbstverständlich mutet dem heutigen Betrachter diese detailreiche und lebendige Szene an und doch gibt es nur wenige vergleichbare Darstellungen. Gemälde und Grafiken vom späten Mittelalter bis zum ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert zeigen die Ikonografie des spielenden Kindes sowie gängige Spiel- und Wohnmilieus und machen deutlich, dass erst seit gut 200 Jahren vermehrt Räume mit der Funktionszuschreibung eines Kinderzimmers versehen wurden. Dies hängt eng mit einer sich wandelnden Beurteilung der Kindheitsphase und des Kinderspiels zusammen, was wahrnehmbare Auswirkungen auf die Darstellungsmodi und -kontexte hat. Inwieweit Uhdes Kinderstube mit der alltäglichen Lebenswelt bürgerlicher Kinder in Verbindung gebracht werden kann, veranschaulichen sachkulturelle und schriftlichen Überlieferungen. Sie eröffnen Einblicke in die Verbreitung und Einrichtung von Kinderstuben, in gängige Spiele und Spielzeuge sowie zu Kinderkleidung im 19. Jahrhundert. Durch diesen interdisziplinären Forschungsansatz zeichnet die Untersuchung ein umfassendes und lebendiges Bild vergangener kindlicher Lebenswelten.

The Play World chronicles the history and evolution of the concept of play as a universal part of childhood. Examining texts and toys coming out of Europe between 1631 and 1914, Patricia Anne Simpson argues that German material, literary, and pedagogical cultures were central to the construction of the modern ideas and realities of play and childhood in the transatlantic world. With attention to the details of toy manufacturing and marketing, Simpson considers prescriptive texts about how children should play, treat their possessions, and experience adventure in the scientific exploration of distant geographies. She illuminates the role of toys—among them a mechanical guillotine, yo-yos, hybridized dolls, and circus figures—as agents of history. Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws from postcolonial, childhood, and migration studies, she makes the case that these texts and toys transfer the world of play into a space in which model childhoods are imagined and enacted as German. With chapters on the Protestant play ethic, enlightened parenting, Goethe as an advocate of play, colonial fantasies, children’s almanacs, ethnographic play, and an empire of toys, Simpson’s argument follows a compelling path toward understanding the reproduction of religious, gendered, ethnic, racial, national, and imperial identities, emanating from German-speaking Europe, that collectively construct a global imaginary. This foundational and deeply original study connects German-speaking communities across the Atlantic as they collectively engender the epistemology of the play world. It will be of particular interest to German studies scholars whose research crosses the Atlantic.

Fritz von Uhde (1848-1911) gehört zu den Klassikern des deutschen Impressionismus und Realismus und verdient deshalb internationale, nationale und vor allem auch regionale Aufmerksamkeit in seiner Heimat. Deshalb sah sich sein Geburtsort verpflichtet, aus Anlass des 100. Todestages Uhde mit der dritten Ausstellung seit seinem Tode überhaupt sowie mit einer internationalen Fachkonferenz zu würdigen, an der rund fünfzig Wissenschaftler und acht Fachreferenten, darunter aus Polen und Japan, teilnahmen. Das Symposium leistete einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Forschung und Aufarbeitung des Uhdeschen Erbes. Der darauf basierende Tagungsband fasst die Ergebnisse zusammen und versteht sich als Auftakt zu ähnlichen Veranstaltungen und Publikationen, die die Große Kreisstadt Limbach-Oberfrohna für die Zukunft plant.

Virginia Valian uses concepts and data from psychology, sociology, economics, and biology to explain the disparity in the professional advancement of men and women. According to Valian, men and women alike have implicit hypotheses about gender differences—gender schemas—that create small sex differences in characteristics, behaviors, perceptions, and evaluations of men and women. Those small imbalances accumulate to advantage men and disadvantage women. The most important consequence of gender schemas for professional life is that men tend to be overrated and women underrated. Valian's goal is to make the invisible factors that retard women's progress visible, so that fair treatment of men and women will be possible. The book makes its case with experimental and observational data from laboratory and field studies of children and adults, and with statistical documentation on men and women in the professions. The many anecdotal examples throughout provide a lively counterpoint.

The 20th century, declared at its start to be the “Century of the Child” by Swedish author Ellen Key, saw an unprecedented expansion of state activity in and expert knowledge on child-rearing on both sides of the Atlantic. Children were seen as a crucial national resource whose care could not be left to families alone. However, the exact scope and degree of state intervention and expert influence as well as the rights and roles of mothers and fathers remained subjects of heated debates throughout the century. While there is a growing scholarly interest in the history of childhood, research in the field remains focused on national narratives. This volume compares the impact of state intervention and expert influence on theories and practices of raising children in the U.S. and German Central Europe. In particular, the contributors focus on institutions such as kindergartens and schools where the private and the public spheres intersected, on notions of “race” and “ethnicity,” “normality” and “deviance,” and on the impact of wars and changes in political regimes.
