Between 1919 and his death by suicide in 1963, Arthur Crew Inman wrote what is surely one of the fullest diaries ever kept by any American. Convinced that his bid for immortality required complete candor, he held nothing back. This abridgment of the original 155 volumes is at once autobiography, social chronicle, and an apologia addressed to unborn readers. Into this fascinating record Inman poured memories of a privileged Atlanta childhood, disastrous prep-school years, a nervous collapse in college followed by a bizarre life of self-diagnosed invalidism. Confined to a darkened room in his Boston apartment, he lived vicariously: through newspaper advertisements he hired "talkers" to tell him the stories of their lives, and he wove their strange histories into the diary. Finding nothing better to do, each lays claim to a stool, five of which form the basic furnishings of the space in which they are trapped. There they sit and wait, passing the time as best they can. Another curious fact of their predicament is that they seem to find themselves blinded, even though the room is brightly lit.The course of the play deals, for the most part, with one character, Cary, as he first makes his way into the room, then attempts to make sense of his being there. Forming a romantic attachment to Vivian, he spends the course of the play searching for her from corner to corner as she makes her promiscuous way to each of the other inhabitants. As Cary searches, always one step behind Vivian, he discovers that the other inhabitants have conflicting ideas concerning how they all came to be trapped in the room, thus increasing his already stupefying confusion.
