The study of listening—aurality—and its relation to writing is the subject of this eclectic edited volume. Theorizing Sound Writing explores the relationship between sound, theory, language, and inscription. This volume contains an impressive lineup of scholars from anthropology, ethnomusicology, musicology, performance, and sound studies. The contributors write about sound in their ongoing work, while also making an intervention into the ethics of academic knowledge, one in which listening is the first step not only in translating sound into words but also in compassionate scholarship.

Robert Plant: The Voice That Sailed the Zeppelin follows the iconic singer through his heights of fame with classic rock giant Led Zeppelin, his second life as a multimillion-selling solo artist, and his more idiosyncratic pursuits. A wealth of former associates lend their voices and recollections to an account that steps far beyond the tried and tested tales of Zeppelin's life and times. This all-new biography details Plant's early years as an unknown in Birmingham, England, with fresh depth and insight. It likewise tells the Zeppelin story from new and unexpected angles, focusing on Plant's contributions to the band's success and on the toll/effect of that success on him as a performer and an individual. After drummer John Bonham died in 1980 and Zeppelin broke up, Plant went solo two years later, in time becoming the only former band member to maintain an unbroken career to this day. His single-mindedness in meeting this challenge might well be his greatest personal attribute, enabling him to push forward without regard for his past or any related expectations. Dave Thompson shows how it is Plant's determination alone that ensured Zeppelin reunions would not become a routine part of the classic rock furniture, as he created a body of work that in so many ways artistically rivals what he recorded with the band.

"Evenings With Led Zeppelin chronicles the 500-plus appearances Led Zeppelin made throughout their career. From their earliest gig in a Denmark school gymnasium on September 7, 1968, through to the last gig that Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones ever performed with John Bonham, in Berlin on July 7, 1980, this is the Led Zeppelin story told from where their legend was forged live on stage. Deploying impeccable research spread over many years, Dave Lewis and Mike Tremaglio brings clarity, authority and perspective to a show-by-show narrative of every known Led Zeppelin performance. With pinpoint accuracy they trace the group's rapid ascent from playing to a few hundred at London's Marquee Club to selling out the 20,000 capacity Madison Square Garden in New York--all in a mere 18 months. Supplemented by historical reviews, facts and figures and expert commentary that capture the spirit of the times, Evenings with Led Zeppelin is illustrated throughout with rarely seen concert adverts, posters, venue images, ticket stubs and photos, all of which offer matchless insight into their concert appearences."--Back cover

This empirical and theoretical book should be of interest to anyone who dares to consider the contentious topic of measuring and justifying aesthetic value in music, as well as the issue of how experts compare to nonexperts in terms of aesthetic fluency, aesthetic sensitivity and aesthetic judgment in appraising music. The book should be both practical and personal for anyone who has a music collection and loves to see it grow continuously but wisely. What makes someone an expert? The key issue tackled here is how one develops into such a connoisseur of music. Overall, the book should spark much healthy debate about rock music quality and aesthetics in general, both among scholars of aesthetics and the musically passionate general public. Many of the ideas for connoisseur development for music could also be applied to appraisal in other areas of aesthetics beyond music, such as films, visual art, or literature. Words of Praise Professor Lundy's Guide to Rock Music Connoisseurship is simply fantastic. It is written with elegance, eloquence, and passion. His vast knowledge of rock’n’roll will enlighten every reader, and his enthusiasm for this topic is infectious. The book is designed to be comprehensible to any reader, but also carefully cited to please the most demanding scholar. He successfully aims to teach the reader how to become expert in evaluating the aesthetic quality of music, using a precision system to guide us into deeper and defensible judgements on what pieces of music are the best and which are the worst. This is a beautiful book that enriches the heart and brightens the mind. --Rhett Diessner, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Lewis-Clark State College, author of Understanding the Beauty Appreciation Trait: Empirical Research on Seeking Beauty in All Things Aesthetic judgments of music are important, but poorly understood. To the everyday listener, they may seem arbitrary or otherwise inexplicable. In this book, Professor Lundy offers an unashamedly positive view on aesthetic judgments, emphasizing their rational nature and showing how various non-aesthetic biases that do exist can be minimized. The result is a joyful celebration of music, science, and connoisseurship, which is sure to spark further interest and debate on this fascinating topic. --Professor Patrik N. "Between 1975 and 1977, there is little doubt that Led Zeppelin ruled supreme as the biggest band in the world. Bigger audiences, bigger stage settings, bigger venues - lights, lasers and dragon suits. All this combined to produce some of the most iconic images of the 1970s rock era. The book profiles the work of three highly respected photographers. Terry O'Neill made his name documenting the fashions, styles, and celebrities of the1960s. He was also on hand to capture Led Zeppelin at Earls Court in London on May 23, 1975, at Tampa Stadium, Florida on June 3,1977 and at New York's Madison Square Garden on June 7 of the same year. Similarly in the right place at the right time was Michael Brennan. Michael had built a reputation working for various daily UK newspapers in the UK. He moved to America in 1973 and began working on various entertainment and sporting assignments. In early 1975, Michael travelled with the band on their rented luxury jet, a Boeing 720B known as The Starship. He was then in close proximity for their show on January 31,1975 at Detroit's Olympia Stadium. San Francisco based former Rolling Stone magazine chief photographer Baron Wolman was in attendance to capture what would turn out to be the Led Zeppelin's final performances in America. In front of 50,000 fans each day they performed in the open air at the Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland California, on the afternoons of July 23 and 24,1977. Baron's chronicling of the band in stark daylight offers a unique portrayal of their final appearances in a large stadium setting"--Provided by publisher.
