From ‘Aggressive Masculinity’ to ‘Rape Culture’ is the fifth volume in this series and explores the relationship between gender and sex roles and socialisation and education, foregrounding issues of inequity and different forms of oppression in various contexts. It tells a rich story of transformation of a field over nearly half a century, in relation to the theorisation of gender and sexuality in educational philosophy and theory. The transformation of this field is mapped on to broader social trends during the same period, enabling a better understanding of the potential role of educational philosophy and theory in developing feminist, queer, and related veins of scholarship in the future. The collection of texts focuses on a wide range of topics, including nature versus nurture and the debate over whether gender and sex roles are natural or based upon culture and socialisation, gender and sexual binaries, and how power is organised and circulates within educational spaces (including possibly online spaces) with regard to enabling or disrupting sexually oppressive or violently gendered social conditions. Other important trends include Internet activism and the use of intersectional theory, postcolonial theory, and global studies approaches. From ‘Aggressive Masculinity’ to ‘Rape Culture’ will be key reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of philosophy of education, philosophy, education, educational theory, post-structural theory, the policy and politics of education, and the pedagogy of education.

Many people have been victims of rape, but we are all victims of what has been called a "rape culture." This topic deserves more attention towards education and prevention, and not just on the college campus. Rape culture is an idea that links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which commonly-held beliefs, attitudes, and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape. This edited collection examines rape culture in the context of the current programming-attitudes, education, and awareness. Contributors explore changing the programming in terms of educational processes, practices, and experiences associated with rape culture across diverse cultural, historical, and geographic locations. The complexity of rape culture is discussed from a variety of contexts and perspectives, as this volume contains interdisciplinary academic submissions from educators and students, as well as experiential accounts from members of various community settings who are doing work aimed at making a positive difference towards programming change.

This volume presents a diverse group of opinions that lay the foundation for change in basic attitudes about power, gender, race, and sexuality -- for a future without sexual violence. The contributors to this sourcebook share the conviction that rape is epidemic because our society encourages male aggression and tacitly or overtly supports violence against women. Cumulatively, these 34 essays by such figures as Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, Ntozake Shange, Michael Kimmel and Louise Erdrich situate rape on a continuum extending from sexist language to pornography, sexual harassment in schools and the workplace, wife battering and date and marital rape. Highlights include a proposal to make rape a presidential election issue, an analysis of the churches' ambivalent response to societal violence, guidelines for raising boys to view themselves as nurturing, nonviolent fathers and inspirational visions of personal or institutional change.

Can boys really be boys? Gerald Walton and Gianluca Agostinelli say, "yes" - but not without reservation. As accomplished scholars and educators on gender and learning, they advocate for the disruption of usual ideas about masculinity and how it shows in the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of boys and men. Can boys really be boys? Gerald Walton and Gianluca Agostinelli say, "yes" - but not without reservation. As ac-complished scholars and educators on gender and learning, they advocate for the disruption of usual ideas about mas-culinity and how it shows in the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of boys and men. These ideas are disseminated and validated through pop culture, schooling, athletics, so-cial media, family, places of worship, playgrounds, pornog-raphy, and other sites of learning. With sharp, feminist-informed analyses of contemporary events and news sto-ries, Walton and Agostinelli present a 'heads up' to boys and men: the problem of sexual violence against girls and women is ours to address and work through. Their purpose is to prevent sexual assault by challenging the pressures and expectations of what it means to be a man in today's society. Some men respond to their call with threats and hostility. Yet, these reactions justify Walton's and Agosti-nelli's argument that the gender norms rationalized and reinforced daily are the very roots of the problematic and even egregious conduct of some boys and men. If sexual violence is a learned behaviour, then it can certainly be un-learned in the process of boys being boys.

Framing The Rape Victim written by Carine M. Mardorossian and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-13 with Social Science categories.

Winner of the 2016 Nonfiction Category from The Authors' Zone In recent years, members of legal, law enforcement, media and academic circles have portrayed rape as a special kind of crime distinct from other forms of violence. In Framing the Rape Victim, Carine M. Mardorossian argues that this differential treatment of rape has exacerbated the ghettoizing of sexual violence along gendered lines and has repeatedly led to women’s being accused of triggering, if not causing, rape through immodest behavior, comportment, passivity, or weakness. Contesting the notion that rape is the result of deviant behaviors of victims or perpetrators, Mardorossian argues that rape saturates our culture and defines masculinity’s relation to femininity, both of which are structural positions rather than biologically derived ones. Using diverse examples throughout, Mardorossian draws from Hollywood film and popular culture to contemporary women’s fiction and hospitalized birth emphasizing that the position of dominant masculinity can be occupied by men, women, or institutions, while structural femininity is a position that may define and subordinate men, minorities, and other marginalized groups just as effectively as it does women. Highlighting the legacies of the politically correct debates of the 1990s and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the book illustrates how the framing of the term “victim” has played a fundamental role in constructing notions of agency that valorize autonomy and support exclusionary, especially masculine, models of American selfhood. The gendering of rape, including by well-meaning, sometimes feminist, voices that claim to have victims’ best interests at heart, ultimately obscures its true role in our culture. Both a critical analysis and a call to action, Framing the Rape Victim shows that rape is not a special interest issue that pertains just to women but a pervasive one that affects our society as a whole.

Feminist Theory in Diverse Productive Practices is the second of two volumes examining gender and feminist theory in Educational Philosophy and Theory. This collection explores the difference that gender and sexual identities make both to theorizing and working in education and other fields. As the articles contained in this text span nearly 40 years of scholarship related to these issues, this volume sheds light on how feminist, gender, and sexuality theory has evolved within and beyond the field of philosophy of education over time. Key themes explored in the book include women’s ways of knowing, the challenges women (and girls) face in taking up professional employment across diverse fields historically and today, and how feminist and related theories can enable women in professional development roles to empower each other. The book tells a rich story of how gender and sexuality theory has been brought to bear on discussions of educational practice in diverse fields over decades of publication of Educational Philosophy and Theory. Feminist Theory in Diverse Productive Practices will be key reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of philosophy of education, philosophy, education, educational theory, post-structural theory, and the policy and politics of education.

The Tough Standard written by Ronald F. Levant and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-25 with Social Science categories.

Men are commonly expected to act "masculine" (e.g., self-sufficient, stoic, strong, dependable, brave, tough, and hard-working) while avoiding stereotypically "feminine" traits (e.g., emotional expressivity, empathy, and nurturance). Few, however, realize that these qualities--when taken to the extreme--can cause emotional constriction, substance abuse, depression, aggression, and violence in many men. Further, even though most men are not violent, decades of research has shown that masculinity is distinctly related to sexual and gun violence and men's poorer health. Considering how girls and women have benefitted from decades of conversations on navigation of their gender in a changing world, similar processes are urgently needed for boys and men. The Tough Standard connects the dots between masculinity and the present moment in American culture (defined by high-profile movements such as Me Too, March for Our Lives, and Black Lives Matter), synthesizes over four decades of research in the psychology of men and masculinities, and proposes solutions to corresponding social problems.
